No, seriously, you guys. ALL.THE. SQUEE.

As ever, do not read the comments. I started to read the comments I didn't mean to I'm sorry the stupid it burns. I shall note that when Superman was in an ACTUAL rom-com, it ran for FOUR SEASONS. And then I shall ignore.

I bibbled about the "First Look" (which appears to be some form of the upfronts sizzle reel rather than a conventional trailer) already on YouTube, because that seems to be my thing now, but for those who prefer it, here is the written squee, more or less as things come up in the reel:

They had me at "My name is Kara Zor-El." Two reasons for that. The lesser reason is that "My name is X" is how all the DC shows over on the CW start (Arrow, The Flash, even iZombie despite coming from a Vertigo title), so it's a nice little tie of kinship even if it isn't really in the same continuity (more likely given how DC has proceeded thus far).

More importantly, though, at least to my little fangirl heart, is that she's KAR-a, not KARE-a. Adaptations have been the latter since 1998, and I thought I was over it. The probably-out-of-proportion degree of joy this gives me makes it clear that I was just resigned. :-)

Adorkable Bespectacled Kara. Who bears a more-than-passing resemblance to Adorkable Bespectacled Clark. And who strikes me entirely as her going "I am going to be normal, dammit!" As her sister points out she's "always wanted" to be. Which also makes perfect sense, because one of the most important things about her character -- as distinct from Clark -- is that she lived her whole childhood as a normal person. She went from being an ordinary kid among ordinary people to being a Kryptonian on Earth and a teenager at the same time. No way in hell is that all going to be settled in her head by age 24.

Best Friend Boy narrowly misses being Duckie from Pretty in Pink (with his massive case of Nice Guy [TM]-itis) by actually asking her out instead of expecting that she will somehow magically become his girlfriend by osmosis. Continuing to be her friend anyway also gets points. And I like Jeremy Jordan, so yay.

Cat Grant at the head of a media empire. Because OF COURSE. In the age of the 24-hour news cycle and digital everything, nobody in the journalistic realm of the DC universe is better suited. Also, Calista Flockhart is cracking me up and scaring me at the same time. (I've seen The Devil Wears Prada invoked a few times, and fail to see how that's a problem.) And the "What's wrong with 'girl'?" speech is killer, not because I necessarily agree with her, but because the discussion is happening within the context of the show. Kara certainly doesn't seem to be entirely sold, but it's done, and Cat is her boss, and there's a lot of potential in how she negotiates the fact of it.

Kara and Alex's sister dynamic promises to be fantastic. They disagree, but they get each other, and it's just gorgeous.

I really, really like the costume. I don't have time to make it, but I think I might have to make it. When the promo images first came out, I was iffy about two things: The black tights and the blue inside the S. In the context of the little costume montage (and ZOMG could there be a more perfect jab at how extreme the midriff costume has sometimes been in the comics?), I'm still iffy about the tights, but I don't have a better solution to suggest that would serve the purpose of making it clear she's wearing actual tights (as opposed to nude dance tights that by convention -- going back at least to Lynda Carter's Wonder Woman -- are supposed to be interpreted as bare legs). As for the S, I like how it looks in motion. It looks just enough subtler and less cartoony without having to tone down the color palette, which would be all wrong for Supergirl.

I'm very happy that skater skirts at the natural waist are a Thing right now, because she can have the classic silhouette and look up-to-the-minute at the same time.

The sheer contagious JOY of discovering what she's meant to do with these powers and how it feels. Melissa Benoist is so, so adorable, and I am 100% sold on her.

And adorable, not an Abercrombie model. No shade at Laura Vandervoort -- I actually liked Smallville's Kara for the most part, and it's not even that one or the other is more or less beautiful, but it's the type of pretty and how they're styled and presented. This Kara seems like someone you could know, and that's key to the core of who she is, in my personal attachment to her, formed as a little girl way, way pre-Crisis.

Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olson. A+ casting. That is all.

This government guy (the David Harewood character) and the little arc we see of him beginning to respect her, which promises to be interesting to watch develop. I can't see them sustaining this "extraterrestrial threats" thing as her primary superhero beat, but it seems more likely to be an occasional "event episode" thing. We'll have to wait and see on that.

More interesting to me at this point is how the dynamic with him points up how much this is a millennial Supergirl, knowing she's meant for more than what she's doing and burning to prove it. I know that's something everyone faces in their early 20s to some extent, but there's an indefinable flavor to it here that feels really authentic to the people I know who are in their early 20s now. That nuance is something that seems like it will serve the show well in terms of finding an audience (and makes me do that much more of a double-take that it's on CBS).

In sum, if the show is what this "first look" makes it look like it is, I've found my new TV happy place. (And after S2 of Sleepy Hollow, I'm reluctantly but undeniably in the market.) Fingers crossed!

The hubby saw the trailer first...he thought it was god-awful, but at least he told me about it, because I'd not even *heard* about it yet. It looks really darned good to me, so far.

Seeing the short-shorts and midriff top, makes me wonder if we're going to get a bit more of a costume montage than they showed in the trailer. Which could be highly amusing, just for the reaction. XD Because *any* of the midriff versions are....just ugh. [though the shorter shorts & the 'regular' top Kara had at one point wasn't too awful. ^_^] Though I must say, I do like that they're sticking with the skirt, because I think that will always be Classic Supergirl to me. ^_^

The hubby thought it was a *movie* trailer, when I mentioned it looked like a series he was a tad less "it's totally horrid" about it. But ya know, if he doesn't like it, that's okay. There's stuff I watch that he doesn't [although oddly enough the Ra's stuff on 'Arrow' has caught his attention, and 'Arrow' as a general rule is a bit too dark for him. XD], so I won't have an issue with that at least. I *almost* wish it was on the CW, just because of crossover potential, but I'll take what I can get. heee

The show looks totally awesomesauce to me, and I can't wait to see if the show lives up to the potential of the trailer!

Where as Brainy said "That looks pretty darn awesome." :-)

I fervently hope we get more costume montage, because I will giggle a LOT and love it to bits.

I have a slightly complicated relationship with the midriff costume, just because it all started with animated Kara in the 90s, when (a) her look was so blatantly Buffyesque, and (b) I knew so many teenage girls who legitimately rocked the crop-tee-and-miniskirt look on a regular basis. And when they first took it over to the comics and morphed it into a bizarre hybrid version of the classic costume, I wasn't in love with it but it didn't actively offend me. Y'know, until it became the Amazing Shrinking Costume and I started wanting to strangle me some artists.

When Renato Guedes and Jamal Igle swung the pendulum back (the Great Bike Shorts Controversy of 2009), the look kinda grew on me. But I still prefer the classic look. :-)

Really?? Hit the wrong key and everything go bye-bye? :p-----

I wish I could remember the exact comment the hubby made about the trailer, but I think it was more a presentation thing than anything else. XD It seems to have given him a bad impression. *shrugs*

As for the Amazing Shrinking Costume...XD I actually didn't mind Animated Kara's outfit when I first saw it...but for some reason the hybrid just bugged me. Still not 100% sure why that is. But I think the Amazing Shrinking Costume is the reason I cringe whenever the midriff outfits are mentioned. >_<

[although why oh why did the mention of bike shorts make me think of that god-awful outfit they put Diana in when Artemis was Wonder Woman? *shudders*]

I would just *adore* seeing a longer costume montage, I tend to get a kick out of them [the one in 'Lois and Clark' gave me no end of amusement, and I was totally jealous of the Mad Sewing Skillz that it made Martha seem to have....].

Okay, I think I need to go watch this trailer again, just ended up watching it just a little bit ago, and *thought* I saw a STAR Labs building....XD

EDIT: Yah, just imagining things apparently.

Awww, too bad. That would have been a fun shoutout, even if it is the wrong city. :-)

I know, I know. And boy, will that take some getting used to!

I'm positively giddy, for reals. :-D

I bet it'll be a running "joke" in the show that he has to constantly tell people, "It's James." (My mind is a weird place. This makes me think of Sidney Poitier: "They call me Mister Tibbs.")

This looks good. I'm sold on watching the pilot and the first episodes, anyway!

May it live up to its promise!!

I actually had access to the entire pilot (it was a birthday present from a friend), and the whole show is GLORIOUS. I'm just going to say that we are SUPER excited about this show (especially as guys who plan on naming any daughter we have "Kara."). <3

Eeeeee! I'm so happy to hear that. (And jealous. But mostly happy. And actually, I think I'm going to enjoy the anticipation through the summer with the rest of fandom. *g*)
