A wild fandom appears!

Which, given how much I do not need to be watching another full-blown show lately, is thankfully a quirky little vlog-style webseries update of Carmilla.

(Apparently it remains a truism that I never met a Toronto vampire show I didn't like, even if it was produced in Vancouver or pretended it was in Detroit).

On YouTube.

I say update, but it very quickly becomes an expansion into a wider (and unapologetically Buffy-inspired -- seriously, I'm sure they'd say Silas University was on a Hellmouth if they could get away with it) supernatural story that might not be the most startlingly original thing in the universe, but doesn't need to be. The characters are fantastic, the dialogue is clever and poignant and pretty much anything else it needs to be when it needs to be, and it is Ladies Ladies Everywhere (as befits a project produced by the Canadian teen magazine VerveGirl and sponsored -- with hilarious irreverence and lack of coyness -- by Kotex.) The shipping possibilities are legion and served up with obvious glee, for those who go in for that sort of thing, but don't overwhelm the story for those who don't.

Primarily, canon-wise, this means the triangle among Laura, Carmilla, and Laura's lit TA Danny. Who doesn't really map onto anyone in the novella that I can figure (the governesses having morphed into dorm dons Perry and LaFontaine), but who presents the main superficial reason I asked diannelamerc over on FB last week if she and lizbetann had seen the series yet. Because, well:

If I were ship-inclined, I'd be Team Danny just to have the headcanon that they will fall through a wormhole at some point and land in California several years in the past, choose new names with the same first initials, and the rest is history. ;-)

Anyhoo, long story short, I think quite a few people around here would enjoy this thing a LOT. There are 34 eps so far, with two more left in the season, running anywhere from about 2 to 10 minutes long. Their schedule has been to post on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 pm Eastern; I assume they'll post ep 35 tonight since it's not a holiday there, and the finale next Tuesday.

Even without the Danny/Laura thing, you guys are high on my list of People Who Will Probably Love This. :-)

Happy to share the fun! Especially when it's a relatively light time investment. :-) I always feel vaguely guilty about sucking someone into a fandom with loads of canon to catch up on.

I've been watching since it was in the teens count on episodes. :) I'm sure you're quite shocked!

Indeed! Shocked. Gobsmacked. Possibly bamboozled.

(We're going down to the Loop for the meetup with Kaitlyn & Shannon on Saturday...)

Thanks! But I am sadly canceling all my plans for the weekend that don't involve sitting in one spot and not doing much because I have been infected with the cold that wouldn't die and I'd like to give the antibiotics some backup by resting. (That said, if you're up for tonight, I am too, so long as you don't mind that, while the kitchen is in something approaching acceptable condition, my bedroom is a total mess. The antibiotics are working, but the cough is making the whole moving around too much thing not pleasant.)

So, did you see the last ep and did you wait around for after the credits?

Ugh! I am so sorry.

I still have the stubborn remnants of the Cold That Wouldn't Die, but since it sounds like there's no further damage I could do, tonight sounds good. :-)

Yes, and yes! Squeeeee! And also uh-oh.

Honestly, I'm on antibiotics right now, so it's not as if your Cold That Wouldn't Die would do much but flaily weakly around along with the remnants of my Cold That Wouldn't Die But Would've Been Bronchitis If I'd Waited Any Longer To Go To The Doctor. (Who is actually not a doctor, but a Nurse Practitioner, and who is amazing and I will request her over the doctor in that office every time. She is so knowledgeable and competent, and she remembers my history.)

I have yet to get to the comments section to go, "Sequel? Sequel? Please tell me that means you're planning one?" But that's because I'm in frenetic year-end wrap-up mode at work. Or as frenetic as my energy level is letting me be. (This new cough medicine really works! But it does drag down my energy level for a couple hours after I take it.)
