That sick feeling

...of witnessing something Terribly Terribly Wrong, and there's not a damn thing I can do about it.

Normally I avoid anything about Britney Spears like the plague, on the logic that the last thing the woman needs is more media scrutiny, so I'm not going to support it. I'm not sure why I even clicked through to this article from a tweet, but I did, and it turned out to be an intelligent and hella depressing examination of all the reasons I'm going to continue to avoid anything about Britney like the plague. Because it looks an awful lot like a whole string of people, from her father up to the judge, belong in jail for what's going on here, and it's all about the Almighty Dollar. And, just, ugh.

If only the outrage over a rehabilitated 29-year-old woman (who went nuts for a few years but had been way too sexy before that so clearly she required containment) becoming the personal and financial property of a man she never even liked was half as loud as the chorus that once proclaimed her sexual ‘antics’ as degrading to women.

Christ, don't link to things like that that wreck my weekend.

No, thank you, actually. I didn't realize her father had a permanent hold over her. HOW is that OK? How?

Believe me, I thought twice. The whole thing really does make me feel physically sick, and I don't wish that on anyone.

It is, in fact, several galaxies over from OK. If she's stable and functional enough to work, she should be running her own damn life. And if that means hanging up the fishnets, buying a house in the suburbs, and financing her kids' college educations by selling artifacts of Britney the Media Construct on eBay -- or whatever she wants to do -- more power to her.

That's so damned sad... When will she be allowed to just be?

Maybe never. She wouldn't be the first. :-/ But the court's complicity is a particularly disgusting wrinkle.

Agreed. And what's sad is that any such movement will be perceived mostly as just some frivolous celebrity-culture thing, and people will miss the wider implications.

As someone asked in the comments on the article, how many people is this happening to who aren't famous and about whom we therefore don't know?

*nods* That is more than a little messed up...

I was creeped out by the Britney thing back at the beginning. Look around. How many healthy child stars are out there? It's worse for girls than boys because the boys can grow up by being cast in action movies while the girls have to do the closest thing to porn possible without actually being in a porno because being a sex object is okay but having sex isn't for them.

It's shocking that Britney's life has been handed over to another person as if she's a slave. It's no wonder that she's been acting out for years and it's tragic that now it seems like she's lost the will even for that.

Word. This development just... I'm having trouble even finding the words for how disturbing it is.

Sometimes, I really do think that there should be a law against child performers. Maybe let them be in shows provided the role is shared between a bunch of kids who have family in the area or something, but the rest of the time they should just find a small adult. The price those kids pay is just too high. Some of the parents just don't care and the rest don't understand what they're getting into until it's too late.

The fact is that child stars don't get out alive. One or two manage to quit and walk away but the rest never recover.
