I can't imagine there's anyone reading me who knew her and doesn't already know, but if it's news, I'm sorry to be the bearer. We are the poorer today for a susanmgarrett.

I'm grateful to her for more than I could ever have repaid, and will always regret not reconnecting better in the last few years.

Huge {{{{ hugs }}}} to so many people I wish I could hug in person right now.

No, I hadn't heard. How sad.

Most of us didn't know anything at all until the last couple days.

Passing lurker reading Marag's friendslist:

Ohno! I knew her slightly, back when I was in Forever Knight fandom. She was very kind to this newbie, and she'll be missed.

She was very kind to everyone, and I don't think any of us in that fandom weren't touched by her.

Oh my God.

I don't even know what to say.

There's a lot of that going around. {{hugs}}

OMG, I used to hang out with her at MWC back in the day. I had no clue. Jeez.

Most of us knew nothing at all until Wednesday. There's a lot of shock going around.

I should have known better than to think that anyone who reads me would have read it from someone else. Her threads wove much to far for that. :-}

I didn't know Susan. I am sad for her friends. Most sincere condolences to you.
Aug. 15th, 2010 12:35 am (UTC)
Thank you.

God, I hadn't heard either. I don't think I've been in touch with her since the FK days, but I do remember her fondly from then.

And she was always the pinnacle of fanfic writing to me; since my first fic, I've always dreamed of "writing like Susan Garrett". I still do.

I think that's a pretty widely held sentiment. And, as brightknightie was just saying on the phone, deserves to be more so.

::hugs:: I'm so sorry for your loss. Can I help?
Aug. 15th, 2010 12:47 am (UTC)
The hugs are what's needed. Thanks. {{ hugs back }}

er... *blinks back tears*

What happened?
Aug. 15th, 2010 12:17 am (UTC)
I'm on the phone with Amy R. She says she's willing to give me up so that you can have my ear. :-} I'll PM you the number.

I too was touched by the incomparable Susan back in the days of FK fandom. She published my FK novel in the days before the internet was even a dream. She was generous, indefatigable, enthusiastic and boundlessly kind. Though I've not crossed paths with her for years, I never forgot her or her wonderful writing talent. May she be at peace now, and her family and friends find comfort.
Aug. 15th, 2010 12:38 am (UTC)
Amen. And good to "see" you. :-)
Aug. 15th, 2010 12:41 am (UTC)
Oh, crap.

This is so not fair. She was way too young to die.

What did she die of, anyway?
Aug. 15th, 2010 12:43 am (UTC)
Most of us didn't know anything until Wednesday, but apparently she's been in and out of the hospital with some form of stomach cancer since the spring.

Her brother posted on her Facebook on Wednesday -- her birthday! -- that she had taken a turn for the worse in the past 48 hours, and was septic and in ICU. I think a few very close friends knew something before then, but it was very private.

I'm just - I feel utterly lost somehow. She was so central to my fondest, most amazing fandom memories. A brilliant writer, an even more brilliant storyteller and as kind and generous as anyone could be. I will miss her

Thank you so much for sitting with me through my tears this afternoon. I am very grateful for your... no, I am grateful for you! That's what it is, really.

I am going to miss sending Susan recommendations of her fanfiction and hearing back from her a vaguely astonished "thank you for remembering my stories," as if any FK fan could ever forget them. I am going to miss my self-indulgent wishing that she would finally return to the fandom, now that TPTB's isolation period had finally ended.

I am remembering her preference for calling factions "affiliations." :-)

I am planning a recommendations post, linking to my favorites of her fanfiction, and urging downloading.

Grateful for you too. It was exactly what I needed right then, and I'm glad we were able to synch up on it.

I am remembering her preference for calling factions "affiliations." :-)

I loved that. I even used to try to adhere to it. :-)
