Clearing things out

There has been much of it in the last few days. Outside: cut down the closest to the house of the three saplings we allowed to take root next to the deck a couple years back. It was the smallest, the branches were brushing the bathroom window (and tangling up the windchimes that ended up being the permanent solution to the Kamikaze Cardinal), it was close enough to the house that the roots could have eventually have threatened the integrity of the basement, and we didn't need three trees.

So, down it came.

Also gone: the hedge-turned-90%-dead-thicket next to the lower part of the deck. I have no idea what kind of bushes they are, but I think maybe they're just not meant to last? I don't know. Anything in our yard that wasn't planted by the previous owners was planted by Mother Nature (and since we live six blocks from the Fox River to the west and a block and a half from a creek and a strip of woods to the east, she plants a LOT... around here you have to keep an eye on your roofline to make sure you don't have silver maples sprouting in the gutters), and I am completely clueless as to the identity of any of it.

I'm still very pleased that the bushes in front of the front porch, which I pruned with extreme prejudice last summer, have sprung back green and gorgeous this spring. Don't know what those are either, but at least they were put there on purpose by the previous owners. (Why, yes, we have lived in this house for five years and are still running on inherited landscaping. Your point?) Also don't know what the trees are (some kind of birch, possibly?), but there are a lot of them over by the creek, and they grow like crazy, as in they already provide nice shade to the deck after two years.

Meanwhile, one little maple is holding valiantly on in the middle of the back yard where we would actually want a tree, which very seldom happens. Mostly we get little baby maples that we then have to pull out of the shady protected spots that are shady and protected because there's, y'know, a house there. Or garage. Behind our garage is The Jungle. I go out there with the loppers a couple times every summer to wreak havoc. Which is kind of sad, because that's also where the wild strawberries grow.

Anyway, the tree and bushes are now in a very big pile in the back yard, until I get up enough oomph to get the saw and loppers back out to break them up so they can fit into yard waste bags.

Or possibly we should buy a chiminea. It's a VERY big pile. O_o

Today it was wet outside, so my clearing-things-out happened inside, and now I have a costuming workroom I can actually WORK in again. It's only been in desperate need of excavation since I designed Taming of the Shrew two years ago. *blush* It actually took less time to get everything put away than I expected, even though I've sort of just been shoving stuff in there at random ever since. So now I can get to work seriously on stuff for Dragon*Con, and also pitch in a bit for Midsummer.

As ever, all this physical clearing-out-of-stuff is very therapeutic for the brain, which has been notably scattered of late. I'd probably keep up my momentum and keep at it through the weekend, but tomorrow I'm off to Wisconsin for Niece's baptism.

Still, it's nice to have this much done.

Ooh, this is a definite thought. There are several areas that could certainly use fresh mulch.

Congrats on the motivation and the accomplishments! It feels so good to get things under control. I've spend so much time lately getting things cleared out myself. I'm enjoying being outside getting my landscaping in order.

Thanks! I think it's tytaniaherself who swears by cleaning her bathroom. And I say life is never completely out of control if you're caught up on laundry. But this is a step up, and nice to have done.

Sounds like you've been incredibly busy! Chiminea = fire = goooooood. ;) Bring marshmallows. Lots and lots of marshmallows.

Indeed! I'm always on board with fire. ;->
