Not quite disqualified yet

From considering myself a figure skating fan, that is. Though it's a close thing.

I was thinking that I hadn't watched anything since the last Olympics, and was all ready to be appalled at myself, but then I clicked on my "skating" tag and reminded myself that the last thing I watched was actually Worlds in '08.

Not exactly obsessive, but not yet Olympic-only. At which point you almost might as well not bother. *mock-snobby sniff*

I do always seem to miss the pairs short program, which invariably seems to happen before I've managed to look up when things are actually happening.

I sort of want to see the ice dancing, which I suppose means I should go find out when that's on.

I can't even remember whether dance still has three events, or if the rules overhaul cut it back to two. That's how out of touch I am.

Also, I still haven't properly looked up when things are. I'm lucky brainiacfive noticed the pairs long was on tonight.

Elf and I are watching the skating together. Pairs short last night was actually QUITE lovely. (Seriously...check out the leading Chinese couple whose names I can't remember and the Germans who did "Send in the Clowns." My first thought was, "Oh, no, not AGAIN," because that song is SO overused...but they did NEW and LOVELY things with it and it was FUN and playful and clever and really excellent. There were others who were excellent, but those stand out most clearly to me.)

I'm SO out of the loop; since the kids have been born, I've fallen so far away from watching skating that not only have I not heard of anyone who's not doing commentary but I didn't even know that the sport had changed from marks to this new, weird single score system that I TOTALLY don't understand and that TOTALLY doesn't give us ANY indication of HOW they were scored which drives me BATTY but which apparently the athletes themselves like.

I really like that this year is NOTHING like 1988 where folks-who-weren't-Gordeeva-and-Grinkov got silver and bronze based on who fell the least. There has been some falling, but nothing like that year. Costumes have been reasonable and, in fact, some truly LOVELY and tasteful stuff.

My favorite thing has been that I'm seeing GORGEOUS, beautiful choreography in the pairs this year, with some lovely artistry in the transitions in and out of moves and especially moving into and out of spins and lifts and death spirals. Really, really lovely stuff that I've not seen before (not that I've watched in YEARS, so this may be standard now). I've LOVED what I've been seeing and it's just so smooth and graceful and a lot of what I'd always seen as a bit jerky is just no longer there at all. LOVELY stuff.

The new scoring, though? It's like a cypher.

I used to watch almost any figure skating that was on TV, but I haven't watched much lately, and I'm not sure why.

You might find the discussion on my Worlds entries interesting. The scoring overhaul might be partly to blame.

I'm having terrible TV decisions tonight and tomorrow, because I want to see Pairs finals tonight, but I also want to watch Westminster. So unfair to put two of the only sporting events I EVER watch (Westminster and Winter Olympics) opposite each other.

That is indeed very rude of them. {{ sympathy }}

I'm pretty close to flunking my True Fan status. I completely missed US Nationals this year. It's bad when I'm watching skating and saying "Who are these people again?" I haven't *heard* of half the competitors. I can still snark at the commentators, right?

I completely missed everything for the last nearly two years, so I can't say a thing.

Snarking at commentators is a requirement, however. Except for Scotty. Scotty makes everything more entertaining.

I've been far less rabid of a skating fan than I used to be. The new scoring system has me utterly confuzzled.
