80s cuteness

SyFy's V marathon is reminding me once again of the Unbearable Cuteness of Willie and Harmony.

I vividly remember how much it broke my brain that Robert Englund was under that Freddy makeup and hat.

Ha! I was just telling brainiacfive that when it originally aired, I somehow didn't register that Visitor sharing a joint with Daniel. It was years before I noticed it on a rerun and realized he was stoned.

So I'm not the only one who just can't *see* Robert Englund as Freddie Anything. I mean, there must be some mistake, because to me he'll always be Willie and how could Willie ever be evil? :)

Afraid I can't help you there, because I totally bought Freddy, and am reserving judgment on Jackie Earle Haley (who I objectively agree is an inspired choice) only with considerable effort. Englund can be DAMN creepy, even with his own face (viz. Nightmare Café).

But he's also Always Willie, because he was just so damn good and so endearing in that role.

Well, it helps that V is pretty much the only thing I've ever actually seen him in... :)

It took me a long time to marry the idea of sweet Willie becoming Freddy Kruger. And then, at some point, I was able to separate the two.

And now, anyone who is seeing those reruns for the first time [but has seen the Freddy Kruger movies] is going to be having the same issue in reverse.

That's actually been true for a long time. He became famous as Freddy in between the original airings and when they reran both miniseries going into the series. I knew several people in high school who even watched them the first time around, but didn't particularly remember Willie. Not that I could understand how anyone could do that!

Good point. I'd forgotten there was some time between the 2 minis and the actual series.

Gah! Who could not remember Willie? Tho' I did have one scene misattributed to him. The one with the "Here mousie mousie" bit by the dumpster. For some reason, I thought that was Willie for many years and was corrected when they re-ran everything late last year...

Have you read Kenneth Johnson's sequel novel? It's not that great-- you know immediately who's going to die, what the 'twists' are, and the prose is rather clunky-- but you'll get some nice stuff with Willie and Harmony.

No, but honestly, I'm not likely to read a whole mediocre book just to get nice bits with them. I just like them being cute on my TV.

I probably would have been all over it in high school, when I had more reading time. Thanks, though!!

LOL Watching the screen and my brain going "but...but...that's FREDDY!! He's not supposed to be NICE!! And CUTE!! Really!!" when I watched V initially really did make me go 'round and 'round. LOL

V reruns...makes me wish I had cable. **sighs**
