Where the heck have you been??

Hey, look! Once again it's "news" that girls are into comics and media fandom. Lots of girls, even.

Welcome to 1985. *eyeroll*

I would threaten you with some form of bodily harm for that, but am confident Mrs. Simian has it covered.

And in our next edition of The Journal of the Blatantly Obvious, we'll be featuring 'Water is Wet' by Professor Smith of Cambridge and 'Gee, It Rains a Lot in the UK' by Professor Jones at Oxford...

Ooooh! Clearly I must get my hands on this issue. ;-D

What? Girls read comics? Really??!!! I don't believe you! Next thing you'll be telling me that there are girls who are interested in two guys having sex. Hmmph.

(I once had a coworker seriously explain to me that guys are aroused by the idea of two girls having sex, but girls aren't aroused by two guys having sex. So after I picked myself up off the floor and managed to stop crying from all the laughter...)

I would give a great deal to know the context of that conversation.

Watch for part two where they break the news that comics are even aimed at grown-ups now....

And yet the mainstream media had just recently done so well at grasping the fact that Archie marrying Veronica this fall is just a stunt and everything will go back to normal in a few months... Every time you think they're learning how to grapple with the blatantly obvious...

Assuming you're not being facetious here, I'm actually very relieved to hear this. I didn't closely read any of the news reports about the fan selling his classic issue in protest -- just enough to boggle at his failure to realize what I could have told him when I was, oh, say, eight -- to know whether that had been pointed out.

I'll be surprised if they even make it to the altar, but it's certainly a given that it won't stick regardless.

I'm thinking that article is a case of "gotta write about something, got nothing to write about, so what do I write about?". Because writing about GURLS is a proven winner.

Maybe? I guess? I dunno. People always do seem sincerely surprised to find that fandom is full of people with no resemblance to the hoary stereotype of the fanboy.

I'm sure there must be other stereotypes both as extreme and as durable still holding on in mainstream consciousness, but I don't know what they'd be.

I... wow. I just have no words. Women! On the internets! In fandom! Apparently this is a shock to everyone.

Every time, yet. It's like a collective and selective case of that weird form of amnesia the guy had in Memento. *snerk*

There are no words to describe the fail.

I've only been online and involved in completely female dominated areas of (sci-fi) fandom for the past 15 years.
Guess it was all a figment of my imagination, eh?
Aug. 29th, 2009 05:48 pm (UTC)
Well, you do have an active imagination...

So, back in 1979 (or possibly '80) when I wore my Belite costume to a con was I not a girl? I'm sure the Wonderwoman I was hanging out with would have be a bit surprised at the not-a-girl assumption too.
Aug. 29th, 2009 05:52 pm (UTC)
Aren't you glad we have reporters to tell us these things? *snerk*

To be fair, I was not infrequently taken for a boy at first glance around the time I first started going to StarCon Denver. But at the con itself, the pink disco dress (worn with a homemade cardboard ankh -- why the hell an 11-year-old would be obsessed with Logan's Run, I couldn't begin to tell you, but there you go) was kind of a dead giveaway.

Seeing as I just got back from FanExpo, which may have actually been MORE WOMEN THAN MEN, I find this particularly annoying.
Aug. 29th, 2009 10:00 pm (UTC)
I'd be surprised if it weren't. Media fandom in general has been for ages.

Archi and Veronica are getting married? Good Lord, they were teenagers in the early 60's! It's about time. The Archie comic books lying around Grandma W's house were leftovers from me and my sisters, I expect. I never got into Super Heroes but I loved Archie, Richie Rich, Little Lulu and Millie the Model. Pardon my diversion from your topic for a little trip down memory lane ......

This is almost as surprising as women being able to be good at math (sometimes the sheer surprise that people have about that is silly too). Plus I was at a Dr.Who/SciFi convention in the mid 80's and I was not the only female there, not by a long shot. Sometimes I wonder if people that write those things inhabit the same reality I do.
Aug. 30th, 2009 06:18 pm (UTC)
I made the stupid mistake of reading the comments. Stupid, stupid mistake.
Aug. 30th, 2009 09:39 pm (UTC)
I made the same mistake. *sigh*
