Today it was that Metra has a recorded announcement for when your train is sitting still between stations due to a "pedestrian incident."

The train I was on wasn't the one that hit the pedestrian, thankfully, but yeeeep nonetheless.

Yesterday, on the *way* to the Metra, I learned that the CTA now gives tardy passes. Seriously. If your El gets delayed significantly (like mine was) you can get a note from the CTA saying, "No really, he/she isn't lying about why she/he's late for work... our train really did break down."

Glad you weren't actually ON the problematic train.

That's... both practical and hilarious, actually!

I guess TPTB think "pedestrian incident" allows people to avoid really realizing that their train hit somebody. especially since collisions between human bodies and trains are generally fatal for the person.

I think it's actually a concession to the typical Chicagoan lack of patience with vague information. It still sounds all official and antiseptic, but it's quite clear what it means.

The standard recorded BART announcement for that and related incidents is of delay due to "police activity."

Here, that would result in probably half the passengers descending upon the conductors, demanding to know that the hell THAT's supposed to mean.

I was actually pretty impressed with it as a way to provide sufficiently specific information while still sounding official.

We get two or three of those a year, unfortunately. :-/ Despite various PSA campaigns trying to convince people that the train will always win.
