Another con bites the dust

For me, that is. Have officially decided to skip Polaris this year. Would love to see Claudia Black in particular, but July is shaping up chock full o' performing, including a supporting role in an indie feature. Third film of the year! I'll tell more about it when I can, but for now I can say it's what I call a "postmodern romantic comedy" because I haven't seen a better/offical genre label for movies like Garden State or Chasing Amy. And yes, this means that those of you not wired for Brian Krause chopping people up will be able to watch it! \o/ No idea at this point what the prospects for its being available to watch will be, but they're planning to submit to festivals and seem to have their shit together.

I could probably technically still squeeze the con in around filming, Elgin Opera's summer festival (we have the Kimball Theatre all month, with a different program each weekend), and n.u.f.a.n. ensemble's semi-annual "Seven Plays in Seven Days" event (in which I was invited to participate last time, after the artistic director came to see company member Mary in Dracula, but I was overdrawn at the energy bank)... Well, you get the idea. When I catch myself thinking that squeezing a con into my schedule is too stressful, it sorta defeats the purpose of going to a con. :-/

Thus it joins Costume Con (which was the weekend of Die Flederflöte, and to which I had won a free membership! *pout*) and Dragon*Con (during which I really can't be upset about being in Hawai'i for my parents' 40th anniversary!) on the list of Cons What Val Ain't Going To In 2009.

At least Chicago TARDIS is pretty safe, as I don't really expect anything to come up for Thanksgiving weekend. And I'm back to seriously considering (and examining logistics for) going to Toronto next weekend for andpuff's signing instead. I've been eagerly awaiting her new book since hearing her read the opening chapter at last year's Polaris, while it was still a WIP. Plus there's the benefit of more knocking-around-the-city time than I'd have on a con trip, and I haven't just visited the city in ages.

::enabling:: I recommend the Clarion Selby hotel, about a block from a subway station on the Bloor line (one stop from the Yonge line) and from a pub that serves excellent breakfasts. (The hotel provides free Continental breakfast, but the bagels and croissants are meh.) For next weekend, a room would be $110 (Canadian) per night, darned cheap for Toronto.

Ooh, thanks! I was thinking along "check Travelocity for Super 8 in the burbs" lines, but that's not bad at all! Especially since I'll most likely just do Saturday night.

Foo! Though being in a movie certainly outranks con-going, I must admit. Given that I'm not thrilled to watch people be chopped up, I like the sound of this next flick. ;)

I wonder if maybe I should go extra cheap to Polaris, then, and stay at my friend's house instead of getting a room.

Sorry. It will suck not to see you. :-/

Was just checking the details on the Chicago one you ARE going to... but I don't actually know who any of those guests are...

It's entirely a Who con. The main three guests are from the TV-movie -- Eight, Grace and Lee. I expect that'll be it for actors, though I wouldn't discount the possibility of a surprise addition or two closer to the con. Old Skool folks, as a rule -- the Beeb has strictures on appearances for anyone currently under contract. It was a bit of a coup to have Lis Sladen last year.

Generally there are several novel authors and/or New Who writers (there's substantial overlap there), and the guys from Big Finish (the company that does the audio adventures) are pretty much always there.

Unfortunately that ends up being a long list of people I have no familiarity with. :(

I like Doctor Who, but I am clearly not old school.

Is that the only con you're going to this year?

Looks that way, unless I hit one of the local ones like Duckon (doubtful, as it's weekend after next, and I have a friend's cookout Saturday and cast meeting for the next movie Sunday) or WindyCon (possible, but only a couple weeks before TARDIS). I tend to do those on the spur of the moment and usually just go for a day.
