Everything in moderation

It's a good thing I decided to look at the Polaris panel list this morning to see if there were any updates.

This way, I know before getting to the con that I appear to be moderating three of the six panels I'm on. *gulp* Dracula, vampire powers, and kids' costuming. I'm actually kind of jazzed about that last one, as I've been having lots of thoughts about how it should be run and now I don't have to worry about stepping on the moderator's toes.

The other two fall into the "I am a Great Big Geek, but someone will always be a bigger geek" category. Just because there's so much information out there, much of it of the serious scholarly variety. Then again, the fact that I fully expect the room to contain bigger (or at least more specialized) geeks may be a qualification for moderator in and of itself.

Being the moderator when you're the least knowledgeable (or at least, when you think of yourself as least knowledgeable!) is a good thing. You can do the job of moderating -- getting the other panels members to talk and making sure nobody dominates the conversation -- without feeling obligated to think of clever things to say yourself. That, at least, has been my experience, since I've usually been the least knowledgeable person whenever I've been moderator.

I am both relieved that I won't be traveling this weekend, and sorry I won't be seeing my friends who will be at Polaris. Say hi to Tanya for me.

That makes sense. Mostly I'm going "eep" because I haven't been on a panel in literally years. Which I explained in my email to the programming folks when I said I'd moderate if they really, really needed it. %-}

Will certainly say "hi" for you!

This sounds good! Knowing there are geekier geeks is a good qualification for moderation - nothing is worse than a know-it-all mod who doesn't really. You'll be fab.

And please let us know how the children's costuming one goes!

I definitely will! I started out as a kid with big ideas and small allowance, so I always have a great time talking to kids getting into costuming. :-)

I can't wait to hear about all the panels, but the kids' costuming one especially. For obvious reasons, I'm highly interested in that one.

Hee! I keep forgetting -- are you going to be able to bring Kidlet out to the faerie fest this year? I got switched to a different character because we lost a cast member, so I've gone from Unseelie bitter deposed mer-royalty to caffeinated gossipy herald...

Bwah! Yes, that's my plan. I just need to make him some medieval garb, and I figured I could maybe toss some faerie wings on him when we head to the fest.
