So. For the first time in aaaaages, I think I might actually make it to an out-of-state con this summer. Possibly two. But not three. And I want to go to three. *sigh*

Door Number One: Polaris, Toronto, July 11-13. Haven't been since it was still called Toronto Trek. Haven't had a membership rather than a dealer's table since... ye gods, 1994. (Although the dealer's table, despite being less than cost-effective, did afford the entertainment value of being placed next to Jason Carter and watching him vault back and forth over his table all day to take pictures with people. That man is so charmingly batshit.) Currently scheduled guests I care about: Rachel Luttrell and andpuff. Likely to have more guests I care about by the time the roster is filled. And today I get their email newsletter announcing a majorly beefed-up costuming track, including a "Victorian Vampire Reception" on Friday night. Because they can't possibly make it easy for me, oh no. *facepalm* Road trip, because the clockdroid costume ain't going anywhere on a train until someone invents dimensionally transcendental luggage. Two weeks before Shrew opens, which means I'd have to make damn sure to build in plenty of Murphy's Law time for getting everyone dressed for that. Especially if I'm concurrently going to use the aforementioned reception as motivation to finally make that bustle dress for which I've had fabric stashed for eight years. (Note to self: Call sewing machine shop and get my damn Bernina back. If they haven't gotten the part by now, time to take it to someone who will.)

Door Number Two: Denvention, Denver, August 6-10. First time I've ever seriously considered going to a Worldcon. Not terribly interested in any of the GoH's (yes, Bujold fans, you can throw popcorn at me now... I'm getting there, slowly but surely...), but it's Worldcon, and will have plenty of people as members who would be guests elsewhere, including andpuff (who I suspect will not actually let me kidnap her to Casa Bonita, but it's fun to talk about anyway). Primary draw is a concentration of horsechicks, including butterflykiki, whom I haven't seen in person since... yikes, has it been since that camping trip? 2001? Eeep! Would probably see more of neonhummingbird there in a few days than I have in the last four years of living an hour away from her. %-} Also, of course, THE masquerade. For which I need to either (a) figure out how to pack the clockdroid costume such that I can take it on an airplane without paying excess baggage, or (b) ship some of it ahead to my parents' house. And bring smelling salts, because Mom will faint if I actually make it out there two years in a row.

Door Number Three: Dragon*Con, Atlanta, August 29 - September 1. Mindbogglingly ginormous con with a guest list so long they alphabetize it. Infamous costuming track, including the other THE masquerade. Several buds have mentioned going (quasievil_bunny, I think? Who else?), and it's just one of those cons one should really go to at some point.

Just looking at the above, Doors Number One and Two seem to be carrying the most weight. If I have to bring it down to just one... I dunno. Other elements to consider: Shrew, as already mentioned. World of Faeries, for which I've been asked back as Unseelie Court, this time with no rehearsal commitment 'cause they know I know what I'm doing. Whatever might come up to audition for that I don't know about yet. And there's the rub that makes it tough to plan in general...

>"yes, Bujold fans, you can throw popcorn at me now..."

Or I can throw more books at you. :-) Just let me know. If her military scifi family saga did not immediately grab you, she also writes fantasy in two or three flavors. And if length is a problem, she's got a volume of short stories, too. ;-)

Let me finish the two I have, and I'm sure I'll go further. I'm still about a third of the way through the first one.

And it's not that I'm not enjoying it. It's just that I keep one book in the car to read at lunch/in waiting rooms/etc., and one in the house to read a chapter a night while steaming. And that's the one I'm keeping in the car. I haven't been going out to lunch much lately, and when I brown-bag it I tend to eat in my office and websurf. Hence the slow going. :-) I am getting quite fond of Cordelia, though.

Hey, BTW, World of Faeries? Can I get you to e-mail me the name of the person who's running that?
Feb. 27th, 2008 12:57 am (UTC)
You want the entertainment guild leader, or the uberbosses?
Feb. 27th, 2008 12:59 am (UTC)
I think entertainment guild person would be better. Thank you!

*hugs and stumps for DenVention, but you know that* And yes, ohmigod, it might be 2001 since then... I mean, Tina got married before that, didn't she? ANd I haven't been outta state in way the heck too long. Chicago in 2003 or so, and that's been it. But I can see the appeal of all three cons.

Hmmm. I should probably get some kind of costume together for the ball....

I think may be that was 2001? Or 2002? Can't remember whether I went out to CO before or after that.

Did I see you in 2003? I'm so confused...

And it would be awesome, it really would. Man, when I was home for my class reunion last summer, my eyes about fell out of my head just driving through Denver. I barely recognize the place!

On the plus side of WorldCon, I believe I can speak for Kiki and say that you are welcome to room with us if you would like (unless brainiacfive is accompanying and you intend on your own room, which is entirely understandable), thus bringing your total costs down (and yes, guaranteeing facetime with me, if you actually want that much :P).

Also, I'll totally let you kidnap me to Casa Bonita. :) I haven't been there since I was, like, 10.
Feb. 27th, 2008 12:25 pm (UTC)
The likelihood of Brainy attendance is unknown, but I think he's looking seriously at GenCon (which one might need to get to while the getting is good, what with the Chapter 11 and all). He also has more vacation time, but expense also being a factor, I suspect he's not in the market.

IOW, yes, I will most likely take you guys up on that if I end up going!

I understand CB renovated a couple years ago, so I'm dying to see it. And I'll likely have one of the parentals' cars. Of course, Kiki will also presumably be car-having, so never mind. *facepalm*
Feb. 28th, 2008 04:37 pm (UTC)
*cackles* Yes. SaneJane and I can take you guys anywhere we need to go, probably. She's a Nissan Sentra, so five fairly comfortably, six if one of them is a little person or doesn't mind lying down on all the others. :>

And it's been forever since I've seen Casa Bonita, so this may have to happen. Jeez, five whole days of people here! We can do anything!

Also, we *did* see each other at Vegas, so ha, has not been as long as I thought. But still. Come to Denver! Drink at altitude!
Feb. 27th, 2008 01:19 pm (UTC)
I don't *think* so? I visited Perri .. .wait, maybe I did? *laugh* Okay, it's too long when you don't remember what year it was, damnit.

And yeah, the place keeps changing, and upgrading, and getting busier. In good ways and bad. I hope you can make it, it would be so cool.

*crosses finges at being able to see you for the first time since that MediaWest!*
Feb. 27th, 2008 02:58 pm (UTC)
Psst! Kiki and I have roomspace for two more people -- wiliqueen could make one, and you could make two. :) Fun-ness and fiscal responsibility would abound!

Don't worry too much about letting us know early -- we can afford to only split the room two ways if we don't have roommates both of us would be happy with, we just would prefer not to. :) Call it about a month to 6 weeks' notice would be nice, if possible; if not, don't stress it. We wouldn't even need that much if Val decides to come -- at that point, you would just be a nice bonus, in all possible senses. :)

WorldCons have been known to sell out; you've got a little while before this one does, I would think, but rates do go up in July, so keep that in mind. (If you have to wait until last minute, you can sometimes find someone selling their membership. I wouldn't count on it, but it might be an alternative.)

I would so love to have you come! I haven't seen you in so long!!!! And yes, LMB!!!!

If you decide to go to Polaris, that would be added incentive for me to go, too.

I'd be driving, since it appears the hotel isn't convenient to public transportation. (Normally I take the train from Windsor to Toronto, because driving in Toronto, not to mention parking? NOT SO GRATE AKSHULLY.)

You're not a Bujold fan? I am astonished. I shan't criticize, but I am astonished. She makes the best blueberry muffins.

I'd be driving, since it appears the hotel isn't convenient to public transportation.

It appears to be just down the road from the old hotel (the Regal Constellation, which apparently Is No More). Which is not convenient to the subway, but we did the bus with minimal difficulty. Mind you, that observation is from 1994, so the routes may have changed, I dunno. And if this hotel is in TO proper (was surprised to see that as the address, actually), it's barely so -- the old one was in Etobicoke, and I found it quite easy to drive to via either Windsor or Niagara. It's way west, before you get to any of the QEW craziness, and the parking situation is suitably suburban.

Also, I drive and park in the Loop on a semi-regular basis. So I have become quite jaded about such things.

You're not a Bujold fan? I am astonished. I shan't criticize, but I am astonished.

*chuckle* Just hadn't gotten around to it until this year, after meaning to for, oh, at least fifteen. So many books, so little time, yadda yadda. Almost literally EVERYONE I KNOW is similarly shocked. I'm liking them well enough, but am character-oriented to a fault. So I appreciate the world-building and intrigue and stuff, but have not hit that point of "I want to know everything that happens to this person ever, right now!!!" with any of her characters. Which is pretty much what will make me want to listen to and/or meet an author. Although blueberry muffins are a plus on anyone's tally sheet. :-)

Which of Bujold's books have you been reading?

Her Miles Vorkosigan series is definitely character-oriented. You must read Barrayar, at least, if only to find out why I snicker whenever anybody says, "I've been shopping." [In the universe's chronology, Barrayar follows Shards of Honor, Lois' first published novel. The chronology isn't quite the same as publication order.]
Feb. 27th, 2008 11:54 am (UTC)
amaka gave me the first two collection reprints. I think the first volume (Cordelia's Honor) goes Shards and then Barrayar, though I wouldn't swear to it and it's out in the car so I can't check.

And yes, they're definitely character-oriented. I'm just not madly in love with the characters yet. :-)

I want to go to Denver SO MUCH OMG. Mainly cos if Paul's gonna win a Hugo? I want to be there when he gets it. I desperately desperately do.
Feb. 27th, 2008 07:23 pm (UTC)
If you do, you must be kidnapped to Casa Bonita also! You are possibly in the top five people I know who will be terribly terribly amused by the Awesomely Magnificent Cheese of it all.

I was thinking about going to Polaris. I'd like to go to a con this year, cause damn I need a vacation. I have friends in Toronto, so that made it an attractive choice. Getting the chance to meet you in person would kind of put it over the top.

But if you want to go to Denvention, perhaps I could tag along with your merry band?
Feb. 28th, 2008 07:18 pm (UTC)
Right now Polaris is looking most likely if I only do one, just by a hair. Mostly because it doesn't involve airline logistics.

But I would totally also hang out with you at Denvention if we're both there!
Feb. 28th, 2008 06:41 pm (UTC)
Ooooh!! Would be great to see you at DragonCon!!!

*fingers crossed*
Feb. 28th, 2008 07:15 pm (UTC)
It's seeming the least likely, unfortunately. :-/ Partly because our Kate will be out for a wedding that weekend. The Widow will be understudying her, and I might cover the Widow, in order to not have to hire someone in just for that little part for one weekend. The director is considering other options, but I did give her that one.
Feb. 29th, 2008 05:27 pm (UTC)
Never know. And then there's always 2009. But you really do need to get there. It's Costume-gasm-tastic!
