My (Whirl)WindyCon Saturday

Thing What I Have Learned This Weekend: Going to a con with 18 hours' notice (up to and including participating and taking Best in Show in the masquerade) can in fact work out quite well.

If, of course, (a) said con is taking place forty minutes from one's house, (b) one remembers where one put away the nine zillion pieces of the already-existing costume one intends to present in the masquerade, (c) one actually manages to pack all said nine zillion pieces in one's car (despite forgetting one's camera), (d) one runs into old friends like jennetj and new friends like maiac who give one a bit of a focus for one's rather hyper and scattered brain, and (e) new friends like maiac are kind enough to volunteer their hotel rooms as changing space so one is not reduced to wrestling with pocket hoops in a very small public restroom. (Not enough gratitude in the world.)

It also helps to have friendly and entertaining guests like Tanya Huff; a dealer's room chock-full of tempting pretties (to which I did not succumb); a hotel full of smart, creative and free-spirited people to chat with or just watch go by; nifty and interesting panel topics; and a nearby Chipotle.

Definitely the ol' general interest con experience I've been missing, if a bit condensed into one day and lacking the late-night silly fun to be had when staying in the hotel.

And okay, a whole new crop of people oohing and ahhing over the clockdroid isn't bad for the ol' ego either. :-)

Oooh. Aaaah.

Thanks! :-D

ooh...ahhh... (okay, so I'm from the old crop. But still. :P)

It's still appreciated. :-)

Y'know, I always meant to go to WindyCon when I was down there and just never managed to take note of when it was. Nowadays I get my 'general interest con' fix over in Minneapolis at Convergence, but I agree there's something about them you can't get at another type of con. :-)

I swear it has some weird obfuscation spell on it...

Seriously. I went to WindyCon *once* about ten years ago and thought it would be a fun thing to do when I moved back here ... and promptly forgot about it and continue to forget about it every year.

and lacking the late-night silly fun to be had when staying in the hotel.

Oddly, the 1 AM fire alarm was indeed the funniest part of my whole WindyCon experience. Sleep deprivation + SUGAR + random chaos = Hee!

Well done, you! I'm not at all surprised at you doing brilliantly in the masquerade. Your entire clockdroid is GORGEOUS and BRILLIANT.

I'm glad you had a good time and got to hang out with friends and attend great panels. Yay!

I get to see you tomorrow!

Well, and I really need to take it to a con where I'm not the only person in the Master category. This one even only had one Journeyman. :-( Apparently it's another one of those regional cons with a storied masquerade that just isn't what it used to be.

But then, I'm not sure costuming is what it used to be. So many of the serious costumers seem to limit themselves to the WorldCon/Costume Con level. Having grown up with the amazing stuff people brought to StarCon and then MediaWest in the 80s and early 90s, it makes me sad.

TOMORROW!!! *bounce*

Am also very pleased it went over well even without borrowing your daughter. Really must get around to fixing some of those pictures so she doesn't look possessed. ;-)

Congratulations on the Best in Show!

What did Tanya have to say? I've been curious about her.
Nov. 11th, 2007 05:31 pm (UTC)
She was on several panels that I went to besides the BT one. It's all kinda random in my head (did I mention hyper and scattered?) but lessee...

The last chapter of the next Valor book was unfinished on her laptop upstairs, although it was due 10/31. I think she said it goes to production in February.

As of close of business Friday, when she talked to Peter Mohan (since obviously people would be asking her at the con!), there was still no decision on a season 2 of BT. The WGA strike has a weird silver lining in that regard, as everyone was released from their contracts on Nov. 1, but there's no new work for them to go on US productions until the strike is done.

The network guy in England had some concerns because the royal family can be very sensitive, and he wasn't sure about the idea of "inventing an illegitimate son of Henry VIII." There was much brain-go-sproing in the room at that one. She kept apologizing for the BT panel being largely a recap of stuff she's posted on LJ, but that was one of several things that were new to me.

She read a nifty little short story about...er, not to be spoilery, unexpected brownies...which was originally only run in a limited-run chapbook at ErieCon and is now in the ISFIC collection. Which I probably should have bought, but I was being good and not spending any dealer's room $$.

Probably more stuff I'm not thinking of right now. Anything in particular you wanted to know?
Nov. 11th, 2007 06:15 pm (UTC)
Nothing in particular, but this stuff in general is great!
Nov. 12th, 2007 03:45 am (UTC)
I just checked Amazon.com, and saw that Finding Magic, Tanya's story collection published by ISFIC, is available there. At a discount.

I bought four copies at the con, at full price: one for me, one each for my two SF-reading nieces, and one for my oldest sister who had casually mentioned when Blood Ties was going to start on Lifetime.
Nov. 11th, 2007 06:41 pm (UTC)
Dang, sounds as if Auntie and I should have come to Chicago THIS weekend instead of next. Maybe then I could also have avoided getting sick. *sigh* Glad you had fun, though!
Nov. 12th, 2007 11:16 am (UTC)
Sorry for the sick! :-( Although going to a con seems an unlikely way to avoid it, all things considered. The Wyndham O'Hare is one of a few hotels around here that are infamously hard on the health, even over and above the traditional Creeping Con Crud.

Tanya mentioned that Kavan was one of the finalists for Mike Celluci that she had seen audition footage for.

I think you had my cell number; it hasn't changed. If not, drop me an email. Actually, do that anyway, so I can give you the land line. Would be great to see you while you're here!
Nov. 12th, 2007 03:40 am (UTC)
More later, when I've had some sleep... but I want to say I'M REALLY GLAD that you did make it to Windycon! Suddenly realizing just who was sitting next to me in Tanya's talk was one of the high points of the con for!

I'm glad you have a picture of the full costume... I didn't consider until too late that I should hobble down to the masquerade to see you with mask and wig. It's awesome (and hey, that's one of the episodes I've seen!).

Somebody should mention that (IIRC) you won Best of Show for the costume.

Suddenly realizing just who was sitting next to me in Tanya's talk was one of the high points of the con for!

Same here! :-D Although I was kicking myself for not twigging it when I was sitting there looking at your place card while you were ON the previous panel...

I really need to take that thing to a con where I'm not the only Master-level entry. I have weird guilt about the two Best in Shows I have for it now because of that. %-}

I would love to do DragonCon. I've wanted to for years, but it never quite works out. Maybe next year...
Nov. 12th, 2007 08:32 pm (UTC)
OOooh!!! Dragon*Con!!! I'm going next year again, so let me know if you're going too.
