Playing catchup

What with this and that and the other, we've been running two to three weeks behind on Doctor Who for a while, but got caught up today. I don't think I really have any Grand Thinky-Thoughts, but I have a few random little ones.

I think they pushed the "just one more trip" game just as far as they could and no further. I really would have had to hurt them. It was unnecessarily thoughtless on the Doctor's part to keep it up as long as he did. He knows she's not "replacing" Rose. She knows she's not "replacing" Rose. Literally DOZENS of otherwise ordinary people have travelled with the Doctor who were not Rose. THERE IS NO THREAT HERE THANK YOU FOR PLAYING. So watching him give Martha the TARDIS key (more than the phone thing, although that was cool too, just with less tradition behind it) had me grinning like an idiot.

And straight from unnecessarily thoughtless to downright cruel...um, Doctor? Brakes. Now. You are becoming what you are dedicated to stopping, and it is not a pretty sight. Yes, offering the chance to the Daleks was a mistake. Letting it send you careening into freefall is a much, much worse mistake. And Martha is still too new and too starstruck to know the signs, or how to turn him aside. I wonder if she even knows what he did to the Family? He wrought those torments quite pointedly alone. He says everything John Smith was, he's capable of too? Well, cookie, you'd better start acting like it.

Because this is something I do NOT want to see get worse before it gets better. I can deal with it staying at this pitch for a limited time, because we have seen it coming. (And dude, I can't even imagine what Sarah would say if she saw him now.) Donna saw it coming. They weren't going to point him in this direction and never have him actually get here. But they need to be very, very careful about deciding where rock bottom actually is. Misjudging that has been the downfall of more than one series, and this is the last one it should happen to.

Speaking of potential downfalls, I'm really, really glad we've so far only been back to keep up with the Joneses once. And that Tish is just stellar, even if Mum is bloody obnoxious. I'm sorry, I know her behavior makes sense in her world, she has her own shit to deal with, but all that just inspires me to scream I DO NOT CARE at the top of my classically-trained lungs. (Which, as certain people around here will be happy to tell you, is not something you want to be around for.) And her actually listening to Saxon's poisoned whisperings about the Doctor when she knows even less about him than about the Doctor inspires me to shake her until her teeth rattle. She's obviously a smart, generally no-bullshit person, and to have no warning bells going off about BLATANT FEEDING HER FEARS HELLO is just all kinds of irritating. I would love to think I'm going to end up loving her the way I did Jackie, but I'm not holding my breath. At least they seem to have realized that trying to milk anything more than a one-note joke out of Dad and Midlife-Crisis Spice would have been unwise. :: knocks on wood ::

So, there we are, and yay! I can click on other people's cut tags again! :-D Now I just have to get caught up on about a month of Stargates...

I can't even imagine what Sarah would say if she saw him now.

I don't know... she was there when the same poisonous deal was offered to Borusa, and doesn't seem to have had ethical complaints. She was also the one urging him to twist the wires and blow up the Daleks (I cannot help but think that if she ever finds out about the Time War, she won't be able to resist saying "I told you so.")

I find the punishment of the Family a lot more suitable, in a very Mikado way, than his usual yells of "No second chances!" Harriet Jones, after all, was defending her planet, and I still think she was *right.* Whereas the Family had casually killed not just for protection but for fun... and they had broken the Doctor's hearts by taking him away from Joan. I'm firmly of the opinion that he's still mourning the life and family he saw in that glimpse of possible futures.

I won't blame her. But there's a big difference between that and going out of his way to make sure each of the Family suffers, and suffers alone. It has nothing to do with preventing them from causing further harm; there were far simpler ways of doing that. It's pure and simple vengeance, to a degree that he has never allowed himself. And I totally agree that it's motivated by the loss of the possible future, but that doesn't make it any less scary.

That's why I suspect Martha doesn't know any more than that he stopped them. All after charging her to keep an eye on him for thoughtlessness (I'm blanking on the actual line now) while he was human, because he knows what humans are capable of...

*deerinheadlights*

Oh, hells. And he told Joan everything that John Smith was, he's capable of. I thought that seemed a slightly odd choice of word at the time.

"No letting me hurt people. You know what humans are like."

I hadn't cottoned on to the realization that he'd split them up as well as tortured them forever (although I'm quite vague on how the chains on Daddy work). Oooh, that is cold.

And he told Joan everything that John Smith was, he's capable of.

I'm reading that as "I can love you too, in my licky, ADD alien way."

*giggle* Well, so am I. But John Smith is also human, and you know what humans are like...

Ah. Thought it might be something like that. Not being gifted magically, I guess we'll just have to wait for it to come on the TV.

I've been trying to remember to repost about episodes as they come up on SciFi, but lost track of it during season 2. I didn't think about doing the same for the PBS airings when they started recently, but I think I did most of my season 1 discussion in other people's journals.
