Way to go, Sony!

WHY in the name of all that's holy would anyone make a minidisc recorder that can be loaded digitally through a USB cable like an mp3 player, and from which those digital files can be exported back to the computer...but from which tracks recorded directly onto a disc through the device's microphone can't?

Seriously, Sony, WTF? Solange wants to make some demo CDs to put in with grant proposals and PR packets and such, and I'm the third person to attempt to reason with this infernal thing she got suckered into buying. After downloading the driver and the proprietary software, and trying every conceivable setting to convince it to upload the recorded tracks into my computer, I finally checked the FAQ on Sony's website.

Which specifically states that tracks recorded on the device can only be "uploaded" by recording them analog through the headphone jack and the computer's sound card.

This? Is seventeen flavors of STUPID.

Amusing observation? The extension for their proprietary file format is ".omg". I can't make this stuff up.

This is the same Sony that tried to do digital-rights-management by infecting computers of anyone who bought a music CD with a rootkit, then claiming that the average user didn't know what a rootkit was, so shouldn't be bothered by it, and THEN (if I remember) tried to sue the people who publicized that you could bypass the whole DRM thing by holding SHIFT while putting the CD into your computer - doesn't surprise me that they'd screw up on something like what you're talking about.

There's stupid, there's bone stupid, and then there's Sony.

Ah, but isn't it more important that a satanically paranoid RIAA be assured of profit through DRM than that ordinary citizens be allowed to use things? Or even that large medical graphics files be usable?

Wow, what model is it? I have a Sony MZM 100 (I think I'd have to look) that I use for field audio for production, and it's awesome. Dump stuff right onto my mac ('course it has to be uncompressed to go to the mac, only the PC can take the compressed files, but ah well)
