You...but...how...WHAT???

Link gakked from head58:

http://www.boston.com/news/nation/washington/articles/2007/05/07/poppy_quarter_behind_spy_coin_alert/

The worried contractors described the coins as "filled with something man-made that looked like nano-technology," according to once-classified U.S. government reports and e-mails obtained by the AP.

Of course they're "filled with something man-made". They are man-made. They're COINS. And, bzuh? What the frell does "nano-technology" look like? Oh, wait...

"It did not appear to be electronic (analog) in nature or have a power source," wrote one U.S. contractor, who discovered the coin in the cup holder of a rental car. "Under high power microscope, it appeared to be complex consisting of several layers of clear, but different material, with a wire-like mesh suspended on top."

So...basically you're saying it's LAMINATED.

Memo to Canada: I won't ask you not to laugh, because you might rupture something in the attempt. But you do know we're not all that stupid down here, right? Right? *pleading look*

Oh, dear lord. I'm so glad the government is busy protecting us from Canadian money. God knows what would happen if Toonies started slipping over the boarder.

In my experience, we'd all have very heavy pockets and wonder where the heck all our cash went. (It always takes me at least three days to adjust...)

Yeah, that was my biggest problem when I was in Toronto... half my pants didn't have front pockets, and I don't carry a purse. No one warned me they didn't believe in paper money! ;)

Forget Canada. I can't wait until someone in Athens asks me to explain this dren. (And all I've got to rebut with is "at least Times Square hasn't been tear-gassed recently"...)

I swear some people just need to feel important. And making some people feel important seems to be what our government is best at these days. :-/

Yeah, I remember when that hit the news. IIRC, my response was an eyeroll and hitting the back button.

I think it was debunked on Snopes, too.

I hope whatever idiot released that "info" without even looking at one of the coins or comparing them to known Canadian coins got a really bad performance review. At least!

Then again, maybe I don't. In this Administration, doing a sucky job generally results in promotions, medals, and other goodies.

Oh, and: one thing that occurs to me about this is that if the Canadian government were trying to spy on Americans, wouldn't they do it with some device that, like, actually circulates in that country? Rather than with Canadian coins, which are worthless there? Just wondering...

There are so many, many things wrong with the "logic," I have to put that one fairly far down on the list. But it's definitely there.

Sometimes my country really embarrasses me. And the worst thing is, these people are supposed to be in charge of protecting us?! Ye gods...

I think we actually have one of those evil spy coins in our "furrin coins" bin at work. I remember thinking it looked like someone had defaced the coin, but nanotechnology never crossed my mind. I must be slipping in my old age. ;)

"The coin was the culprit behind a U.S. Defense Department false espionage warning earlier this year about mysterious coin-like objects with radio frequency transmitters, The Associated Press has learned."

The Associated Press just now learned about this? Everybody who talked about it back when the "warning" came out said that that's what it was. Way to keep up, AP.

Well, we can't have all the stupid in one place, now can we?
