Still seriously considering going to Polaris (The Con Formerly Known As TTrek, and that's going to take some getting used to after all these years!). Started out looking at trains, but like most destinations farther away than Ann Arbor, it would be nice but just take Way Too Long. [insert obligatory grumble re: Office of Doom PTO policy]

The last umpteen times I drove to Toronto were from Columbus, which was consistently almost exactly eight hours. I had it in my head that it would take WAY longer from here, but MapQuest seems to think it's only about an hour longer. Which, depending on when I hit 294, I will assume to be a bit optimistic, but still! I can do that!

I'll still check out flight possibilities, but it's probably the way to go anyway, what with the clockdroid costume, which, with all the various layers, fills about 2/3 of the Big Green Suitcase all by its lonesome. Heck, it did that for Chicago TARDIS when I carried the wig and the mask separately. (Bulkiest getup I have ever constructed, with plenty of margin. After wearing it for about an hour, I wanted to go back to the 18th century and shake people for being idiots who wore far, FAR too much clothing all at the same time.) When I say "Big", I mean so big it's invariably overweight if it's even close to full. You could smuggle a small adult human being in it.

Mind you, when it's come up overweight in the past, it didn't have a big swathe of real estate taken up by pocket hoops. So it might work anyway. Must ponder.

TTREK changed its name!? Crazy! I have fond memories of TTrek and hotel rooms and partying with Klingons and funnnn. (I have less fond memories of being stalked by freaking weirdos from that convention who, hello, 14 year old girl, stop it!, so I stopped going after a while. But OMG, such love for that con!)

Dude, you have all the luck. ;-> I've encountered one of the lowest weirdo quotients of any con there. Despite copious participation in karaoke and dances and dressing appropriately therefor.

Totally! Mostly everyone was really super awesome nice, and I LOVED it. When I was 12, I really didn't understand that grown men asking me to sit on their laps and taking pictures of me and telling me they kept pictures of me in their bedrooms and offering to share hotel rooms with me if I flew to Indiana with them was wrong. (I was quite literally Fresh Off The Farm at that point!). A few years later I clued in that this was seriously wrong. One of the guys STILL CALLS MY PARENTS' HOUSE. "Sachi, that freaky 40-year-old Klingon wants to know where you are again... I told him you're dead, is that okay?"

But I'm a total freak magnet in all walks of life, it seems. :) All The Luck, yes! On the whole, I had mad awesome fun there and loved volunteering!!

LOL! And eeeeep! Sounds like a great strategy to me...

what about making half the drive in the evening after a day at work, spending the night here in the Detroit area (I have a couch you're welcome to), then making the rest of the trip in the morning? So you're not cutting into the PTO thing?

Probably the plan anyway. At least half my extended family, on both sides, is there. :-)

Of course, there could be the acquisition of passengers in the process...

It's almost exactly 10 hours from Chicago to Toronto. When we go to Stratford, we go up through Port Huron (don't have to mess with the Detroit/Windsor traffic) and usually leave after work, drive as far as the border, stay in a very nice Hampton Inn in Port Huron, then cross the border and finish the drive in the morning. If you leave promptly in the morning, you should make TO before noon. Is the con still at the Regal Constellation?

Good, so my estimate of MapQuest's optimism was about right. :-) Thanks!

Yes, they're still at the Regal Constellation. (I hope it's always there, or somewhere in the western suburbs. It's nice to park at the hotel, take transit into the city proper, and avoid the QEW craziness.) I did a double-take last time I went (2003), as I hadn't been in several years and the hotel had done some nice updating.

I usually had a similar plan of attack coming from Columbus, but did my stopover in Detroit with family.

Whoa! Thanks for the heads up. I could have sworn it still said that on the website, but I hadn't paid close attention yet.

The RC was a nice place, but down the street is fine by me. :-) As long as it's out in Etobicoke and I don't have to negotiate the QEW after driving all day, it's all good.
