Doctor Who - Smith and Jones

And series 29 3 is afoot!

I am agog. Rusty done plot. That hangs together. And has pacing and such. :: scans horizon for scary horsemen ::

Before the Judoon even stepped out of their ships, brainiacfive was saying, "It's the Vogons. They just got hired to move it. They don't know why." Which wasn't quite the case, but they were definitely a very Adamsesque working-class sort of alien. From what the Doctor said, at first I was like "Oh, mercenaries. Meh." However, it quickly became clear that they were more like interstellar rent-a-cops. They were there to do a particular job, they did it, and if bystanders didn't like the way they did it, well, that's not their problem. They handed out random incomprehensible booklets of coupons or something as compensation! And apparently even adjusted the gravity to Earth-normal. The oxygen thing was totally an oversight. ("But sir, the briefing just said 'make sure to bring atmosphere with them.' It didn't say anything about them needing more! And in such a short time, too!")

I'm happy to see that Martha seems to be bearing out my predictions, in the "educated" rather than "aristocratic" elite direction. A fair amount of emphasis was put on her analytical thinking and problem-solving; if I were to compare her to any classic companion at this point, it would probably be Liz. That's a direction I can get behind.

The crush is...less pleasing, but understandable. That was a helluva day, involving space travel, aliens, near-death, and unexpected snogging. (And hon, he never claimed it was nothing. Only that it meant nothing. Pay attention.) I'm on board with a crush, as long as it doesn't inevitably evolve into a Grand And Probably Unrequited Passion. Rusty being Rusty, I'm not fool enough to expect that it'll be just a crush and will run its course quickly (my ideal case), but for the moment I can still hope.

So far, in general, I like her. Loved the Doctor quizzing her at every turn. Not just that he was testing to see if she might be companion material, but that it could develop into an interesting ongoing dynamic. "You're smart. Let's see how smart. And how much smarter you can get." He gets to get his teacher on with a bright and willing student. If that's not a valid antidote to the Oncoming Lonely God Storm Blues, I don't know what is.

Next week, Shakespeare. Bring it on!

Through the sheer wonderful coincidences of life and time zones and recordings, I've just finished watching this episode.

And, damn, if despite it being desperately silly, I didn't really enjoy it, still.

Roll on next week. :-)

*nods* This is totally what "New Earth" should have been like, and wasn't because the engine kept stalling.

It's amazing what you can get away with if you just manage the momentum right.

HA!!! Love it!!

Yeah, I was getting a very HHGG vibe to them, which I loved. :D

Oh, very much so.

I loved it! And Martha is an enormous relief after Rose. I just hope we don't get sucked into the Jones Family Drama because I had quite enough of that with the Tylers, thank you. :)

Great introductory ep and a fun ep in general. Loved the pseudo-Vogons and the straw-sipping vampire plasmavore. I actually knew she was gonna pull out a straw because something about the vibe reminded me of a weird little book called the Ink Drinker. Or maybe I'm just the one who's weird. ;)

The romance angle is tiresome, but I'm resigned to RTD's pandering to a certain section of fandom. *sigh*

Loved the transplant to the moon, but I found the reactions of the various patients and staff to be a little overboard. Surely Martha couldn't be the ONLY one to realize that if they aren't all dead yet they're probably safe (relatively speaking). And how come no one mentioned the artificial gravity? Hmph.

Loved the ep, glad to see that Who is continuing on a strong course, and with a much more sensible Companion this time- someone who'll balance out the Doctor's zaniness and keep him somewhat grounded. Can't wait until next week!

Yes, I found the hysteria of all the patients rather over the top. If it was me I'd have assumed someone had pumped hallucinogens into the air or something. And when the aliens turned up, I'd have gone to the top floor and hidden in a very small cupboard.

Loved it in general though, and totally had the same thought about the Vogons!

I've actually never seen any reason to believe that. I'm resigned to it being what he likes and knows how to do.

She wasn't. There were two speaking characters behaving quite rationally, and quite a few extras being the "eye of the storm" in their various groups. She was just the one our attention was focussed on.

And how come no one mentioned the artificial gravity? Hmph.

Hey, there has to be something like that missed. Otherwise we'd start looking for the pod in Rusty's closet... ;->
