Dear sinuses:

Okay, we're six days into the whole antibiotics thing. You're supposed to hurt less today than the last couple days. Not more. That's how this works. Get with the program!

No love,

My antitbiotics aren't managing so well with my cold right now, either. :(

{{{ hugs back }}} Hope yours gets sorted soon! By my own typical pattern, I'm really just being cranky and impatient...

I hate to say this, but have you been evaluated as a candidate for surgery? My sinus surgery was one of the best moves I've ever made.

Also: not all sinus infections are bacterial.

Been there, done that, RIGHT there with you on the "best moves" thing. (The Constant Sick that was senior year? Pretty much continued through the year after that.) It made a HUGE difference.

I haven't been back in for a CT scan since '98 (when everything showed up clear, and I eventually found my way to a neurologist with a diagnosis of a weird presentation of migraine), but I've only had a couple since the surgery that took more than one course to kill.

At this point I can generally tell when it's bacterial. I don't even bother going to the doctor until it's been scoffing at fluids, rest and vitamins for at least two weeks, usually three.

I've had some cold/allergy-related flareups, but this is the first infection in over a year, which is the best record of my adult life. If it's still not better in another couple days, then I'll actually worry, but this isn't that unusual for day 5. I'm just spoiled by the long gap and being impatient. ;-)

I was about to say you shouldn't hate to say it, then I contemplated what it would probably cost under my current health insurance. :-P

With the Kaiser plan I had in 1992, the copay for outpatient surgery was the same as an office visit. So the grand total for three office visits before, the surgery itself, and three visits after was $35! Sooooooo glad I did it then!

Re: P.S.
Oh, dear.

I probably shouldn't tell you what mine cost, right? ;-)

I'm sorry to hear yours hasn't been as successful, by the way. I haven't had a single sinus infection since my surgery in 1998, but I realize that I was extra-lucky that way.

I can guess, but I count myself pretty lucky under the circumstances!

And yeah, I don't think I'm meant to have that much success. Probably due in some measure to the deviated septum, which they fixed then and warned me could undo itself to some extent. Per the 1998 CT scan it had, but not enough to warrant another surgery. If they started getting more frequent again, I'd probably look into that, but so far so good.

Generally I've had about about two a year since '92, which I can totally deal with. So it's all good.
