Diablo update, part 2

After frantically throwing on some sweats and heading for the emergency vet clinic at 6:30 this morning when he sat next to his milk/vitamins dish crying at me and refused to touch it...

It appears to be some kind of infection, separate from the weight loss/anemia issue (for which the leading suspects remain heart disease and cancer; either way it probably didn't help in the bacteria resistance department.). He's also lost more weight, over a pound since his October visit, so he's now under 10 pounds for the first time in his adult life. (You may guess from this that he is not a small cat. He was about 12 pounds in his king-of-the-neighborhood prime.)

He has a low-grade fever, and the vet confirmed my theory that the lump in his neck is a swollen lymph node. There is still the possibility that cancer is involved there, and they want to do a needle biopsy on it if he doesn't improve after a couple days on antibiotics.

(Amusement factor of the day: Bubble gum flavor amoxicillin, obviously the same product as for pediatric use, but this packaging says for veterinary use only. Because we all know how much cats love bubble gum! *snerk*)

So now I just have to find someone to come and give him the antibiotics twice a day between Thursday morning and Monday afternoon. But it looks like I don't have to worry about flying off and leaving him on the verge of collapse. *whew*

Many thanks for prayers and thoughts, and for putting up with the fretting on your flist.

If you didn't fret about him, I wouldn't know you. When you care, you care, and you show it. It's not a crime.

I'm very relieved that there's nothing overtly dreadful, and I really hope the antibiotics do the trick. I wish I were closer so I could help him out... :(

That's great news!

We thought we were going to lose Fiona a few months ago - the vet's initial diagnosis was kidney failure. But we got her on that same antibiotic (and are *still* trying to get pink kitty drool out of the carpet!), and she's totally fine now.

Still sending positive thoughts for Diablo!

Eeek, how scary! :-(

That's one of the possibilities we'll be looking at if he doesn't improve with the antibiotic, but his blood panel in August came back fine for kidney function (and everything else but the anemia). Which doesn't mean it can't have declined since then, but it's not at the top of the suspect list for the moment.

Thinking positive thoughts for Diablo. Hope he feels better soon!

No apologies necessary! You deserve to fret about your kitty! He's *very* important to you! I would wonder if you weren't fretting! (and I'd seriously wonder about any friend who complained about your posts...)

Well, I don't necessarily have to fret in public. And nobody's complained.

I just feel slightly silly going from "OMGWHATIFHEDIES???" to bubble-gum flavored amoxicillin in less than 12 hours. *sheepish g*

Don't feel silly! You love him - a certain level of panic when he's ill is more than allowed! You should have seen me crying over Sheba when she had a bladder infection. A week of amoxicillin later and she was right as rain, but I'd been blubbering on like it was time for the Rainbow Bridge...

That just goes to show how much he means to you, and how much you love him.

Hugs!

Glad to hear the news is looking a little better! I lost one of the two cats I've had for 12 years in March to an illness that came out of nowhere and progressed very rapidly. It was rough. The other has ongoing health issues, but is doing fine for now.

Best wishes for his complete recovery!

(Have you looked into getting a professional catsitter to stop by while you're gone? I have an excellent one recommended by my vet who has lots of experience dealing with sick cats. Pills, insulin injections, nothing fazes her.)

Poor kitty. :(

And lucky you, getting to give a cat medicine.
