"Ancient Chinese secret, huh?"

I have absolutely no idea why, but I woke up this morning with that 1970s Calgon commercial running through my head. Anyone old enough to remember it (and if you are, you can't have missed it -- I remember it being ubiquitous for several years), or perhaps who's seen it as a Retromercial on TVLand, who can help me confirm who was in it?

Mr. Lee, I'm 99% certain, was Evan Kim, who is probably best known in my circle as Tony, Mike's intrepid cameraman in the original V miniseries. (And who is way too good to have practically dropped off the face of the earth the way he has. Has he maybe been doing theatre or something? Or did he just age out of his slightly-goofy-young-guy niche and not get looked at for anything else? The only thing IMDb has for him in the last decade is a JAG episode...)

I'm a bit less certain about Mrs. Lee, but I think it was Rosalind Chao. I know I thought that was who I recognized her as when she joined the cast of M.A.S.H. toward the end of its run.

Anybody know? There are all kinds of references to the commercial on the Web, but I can't find a single one that mentions who the actors are. Which makes me think I'm insane, since you'd think someone would take notice of her identity at least, if not his.

Wasn't Pat Morita in one of them? Maybe?

Now that you mention it, I have a vague maybe-memory of that. I don't remember whether there was more than one; I just know the one where it was the young couple running the cleaners, and the wife pulls the rug out from under the "secret," was the one that got run constantly for years on end.

And now I'm remembering the one that came first (or at least before the one I've been talking about), where Dad was running the cleaners and Son (theoretically Evan Kim) called his bluff on the "ancient Chinese secret." Although now I think I remember Dad being Keye Luke.

Or possibly I'm making half of this up entirely. %-}

I don't know if I was around for those commercials, but it reminds me of the Pearl Cream commercials that Nancy Kwan did in the 80's. As a child, my friends and I loved "reinacting" those commercials. LOL.

Heh, I miss those ads.

The line that sticks with me was from another ad. "It's blue!" (From a commercial for the first tv that showed blue instead of static.)
