Always the bridesmaid

Okay, not always. But it sure feels that way with musicals. In general, I totally hold with the philosophy that "unique is better." In practice, in this particular area? There are times when it would be kinda nice to be pigeonhole-able, darnit. (And again I ask you, WHY did Elphaba have to come along when I was already 34? And make such a smashing success that they won't release regional rights until I'm in a frelling nursing home?)

I have been offered the signal honor of being a villager, and a champagne bottle, and some kind of attendant. Person who called me wasn't terribly clear on that last point.

IOW, random chorus chick again. *sigh*

I probably shouldn't have written on my form this time around that I'd accept any role. I do think this will be a fun show to do chorus in (not to mention dance-intensive enough to get me back in some kind of shape), but I'm not as sure as I was the other day that it will be fun enough to drive to Naperville again Sunday afternoons and Mon-Wed evenings for two months. And brainiacfive is even less sure. :-/

Director (who was vocal director for J&H) sent an email this morning to the three J&H alums who got cast, out of the ten or so who auditioned. (Forgot to mention yesterday that the audition was like a mini reunion!) I assume at least some of those not included were because they limited which roles they'd accept. One of those who are included is our Emma, who (along with our Lucy, oddly enough, but she's currently at Illinois Wesleyan way the heck down in Bloomington, and to her heartbreak was therefore unable to come out for it) counts Belle as her big dream role. Dunno if she got it -- there was some pretty darn stiff competition -- but she's a sweetie and I'll be happy for her if she did.

I wasn't expecting to have a chance at that, but some actual character would have been nice. The gang was all saying I ought to be Babette (and yes, I put her on the wish list), but apparently Them What's In Charge disagreed. Of course I'm now second-guessing myself and thinking I should have picked that side to read instead of a Belle one (they only had you do one, and you had to pick it). But she's also supposed to be a mezzo, and they did range testing and the assistant was all delighted with my high C. Which would be great, if there were an actual character other than Mme. La Grande Bouche (the opera diva/wardrobe) who's that flavor of soprano. Because she'd be fun, but I'm just not the type anyone's going to cast in that role unless I were the only classical soprano available.

*more sighing* If I'm going to back out, I need to do it tonight if I want to avoid burning bridges. They told everyone they'd hear by tomorrow, so I really shouldn't bail without leaving them the ability to get someone else by then. I wish I could go to the first read-through first and get some idea of whether I'll be doing anything but being animated wallpaper before having to decide, but it'd be a really bad idea to wait that long. So, I'm mentally wording a tactful email to Director to see if I can get some idea from her.

Decisions suck. :-P

I'm surfing my friends-of-friends list, and I just wanted to tell you that you rule.

Dude. FoF with impeccable timing. You rock. :-)

I'm sorry for the disappointment. I know how rotten that feels, even from my limited theatrical experience. :C

I hope you can decide what to do. If it were me, I'd opt out until something better (and closer) came along. But I don't know how driven you are to perform. If the drive is big enough, standing on the stage holding a spear would be reward enough, but I suspect it isn't in this case.

Good luck. ::hugs::

but I suspect it isn't in this case.

It's the too-close-to-call that sucks. :-/

Thanks! {{{hugs}}}

Man, that's a damn shame. Keep trying - they can't hold you down if you keep breaking skyward.

I'm sorry :-( But I do agree that if you're going to back out, now is the time.

I'm sorry, you.

You didn't ask, but I'll give you my opinion anyway: I think you should do this one. You love this show. Now you know that *next* time you shouldn't say you'd do any role, but this one you should do.

Opinions are good to have, and thanks. :-)

Decisions do, indeed, suck.
Wandered over here from irish_horse's page where you were giving good advice about writing.
Sorry to hear about your dilemma. I see you've gotten good advice in both directions. Doesn't make decision making any more fun but hopefully will help you see what you truely want.
Now, I don't know you (but a friend of my friend is good enough for me) and I'm really hoping you have a sense of humor in adversity because I can't help but say what's going through my mind:

Oh, we're the boys of the chorus.
We hope you like our show.
We know you're rootin' for us.
But now we have to go!

I'm rooting for you. Good luck in your decision!

Re: Decisions do, indeed, suck.
Welcome, nice to meetcha!

*giggle* It's a good thing I don't know the melody for that little ditty, or it'd be running through my head the rest of the day! ;-D

Our chorus boys for J&H were mostly underage. But still pretty...

< sigh > WEll, I seriously question the casting directors if they can't see you'd be a marvelous Babette, and it just sucks that you'd have to go to all that trouble for random chorus chick. It's a sucky decision. < hugs >

(And I do think you'll be able to play Elpheba someday. All that makeup? You could be 60 under there and get away with it if you have good posture and enough attitude.)

I love you. :: glomps ::

Also, your icon is beyond delightful.

If I were the director, I would have given you whatever role you wanted and then filled in the rest of the cast!

Love & Hugs, Mom

P.S. Did you notice that angstzeit's icon looks like a skinny Diablo?
Oct. 19th, 2005 02:37 pm (UTC)
Yes, but then they'd call it nepotism, and there'd be a whole big thing. :-D

And yes, very Diablo-like kitty. *g*
