Posh hats and family silliness

Thursday night and yesterday were spent at BigBabyBrother's house, where my folks are in from Colorado to watch ShinyHappyNiece while BBB and Sister-in-Love go on a much-deserved vacation.

This perforce entailed getting up at 3 a.m., wearing a couple of my vintage hats (and a cute thrift-store one for SHN, who did not get up at 3 a.m. and who, being 16 months old, of course had no idea what it was all about, but who quite enjoyed wearing, squashing, and pulling on the ribbons of the hat) with our PJs, drinking tea, and enjoying the BBCA coverage of That Wedding Thing, which I didn't realize was a simulcast of the BBC1 coverage, complete with no commercials on the live run. (As opposed to the two repeats that followed immediately after.) There was much pretty in the Abbey and fun silly people in the streets, Mom cried (the woman cries at weddings in commercials, I kid you not, but oddly enough didn't at either mine or BBB's), and a good time was had by all.

Also? ShinyHappyNiece is talking up a STORM and just this side of running. Pretty much constantly. Man, that happens fast!

How fun to share the event! For some reason, it never even crossed my mind to stay up late/get up early.

And what is my favorite costumer's opinion of the costuming in the royal spectacle? :-)

We did it in '81 and '86 (when it was 2am in Colorado!), so it's sort of a tradition. Mom swears it was my idea, but I'm skeptical, though I don't really remember for sure. :-) This time it was definitely hers. I might have considered doing it on my own with all the promotion on BBCA, but would never have actually done it. And it wouldn't have been nearly as much fun anyway.

I adored The Dress (and, like many others, immediately thought of Grace Kelly). Everybody's going on about the lace top, and that's beautiful (love the neckline), but it's the fall of the skirt pleats that impresses me.

And of course the hats are always a good time (Beatrice's pale pink Cthulhu definitely wins), and the guys in uniform. Everything else is too tasteful to evoke much comment. :-)

Among the invited guests, that is, of course. The people in the street were the most fun. Wedding Cake Hat Lady was brilliant. And of course the three friends who were there in wedding gowns themselves, in a prime spot that they must have been occupying (in the wedding gowns!) for well over a day.

I did not watch the wedding, but I did look up photos of the gown. I'm so glad it's not "Disney princess", and I hope the lace sleeves start a fashion. The fad for strapless wedding gowns and prom dresses is unfortunate. (But WTF white for the maid of honour's gown? Only the bride should wear white!)

Someone commented that Eugenie and Beatrix's hats were revenge for their mother not being invited (though Fergie said she'd have declined, considering everything).

I need a photo of your wedding hat. ...Speaking of photos, I found out that the British Monarchy has a Flickr account, and the photostream has the official wedding photos. Enjoy.

Hats!

I liked Pippa in white, mainly because I don't think a color would have worked next to the mini!bridesmaids.

She really, really is. Though she was not as shiny and happy in those pictures as usual. Really must upload the ones where she is.
