From young fans on the CBBC website:

"I think Sarah Jane was a really good alien hunter and if the world had an alien invasion, Elisabeth would be the one to save us. I will miss Elisabeth loads and loads."

Morgan, 9, Isle of Wight, England

I think, in a very real way, Sarah Jane belongs to this new generation of fans most of all. As neadods has pointed out, she became the human equivalent of the Doctor on SJA. After four seasons, she's been a part of a 7- or 8- or 9-year-old fan's world just as "always" as he has. And while Doctor Who is a family show, SJA is very specifically made for kids, and they have ownership of it in a different way. She lives in an ordinary house on an ordinary street and adventures with ordinary kids. (Well, two ordinary kids and Luke. Or, in audience-identification terms, two neurotypical kids and Luke. Which is also important.)

I love that the item includes a boldface assurance (with a link to further explanation) that it's okay to be upset about this. I would hope not too many adults are telling them they shouldn't be upset about someone they didn't know, but, well, adults can be silly sometimes. So it's an important thing to say.

There are pages and pages of it. The kids are amazing.

This is the next generation of fandom. I love it for showing us that.

Just...yes. This.

I'm so...warmed by the outpouring.

Sarah Jane, the Doctor, the TARDIS...it's like all wardrobes now: there is that idea that an adventure might truly be around the next corner or through the next door.

that idea that an adventure might truly be around the next corner or through the next door.

Indeed. And I still love that icon so very, very much.

I adore it too: it's really the heart of the magic of storytelling and the worlds those words spin into our hearts and minds and realities.
