Two yards of spandex is way cheaper than, say, fifteen yards of brocade.

It seems like it should be so obvious, and yet!

I checked out a book from the library this week titled: Does This Cape Make Me Look Fat? Pop Psychology for Superheroes. As a comics fan and a costumer, I think you would find it very funny (but library-funny, not full-price-new funny).

Thank you! I'll have to investigate further based on the title alone. :-D

And of course that doesn't even get into packing for a flight!

No, this'll be my first D*C. The clockdroid is limited to driveable cons, I'm afraid, so the farthest it's been is Toronto.

With all the underpinnings, it weighs about 45 pounds, and as you note the pocket hoops and quilted petticoat are impossible to pack in any compact manner. There's just no way I can justify the expense of either shipping it or taking it as baggage. Stupid airlines. :-(

Mind you, the 15 yards of brocade don't typically involve Just The Right (Not-So-Cheap) Holster, or sculpting and molding belt buckles, or...

I mean, it CAN... (Amidala, I am looking at you)

Only when she talks and I can tell it's Keira Knightley. :-)

This is very true. The down side--spandex is less forgiving of one's figure than brocade.

Only if you handle the brocade just right. And I love watching first-timers discover that proper-weight and suitably fitted spandex = instant imitation muscle tone.

BWAHAHAHHAA!!

Man, it'd take some SERIOUS spandex to help this chick out. LOL

Never could find anything more than stupid swimsuit-type spandex, when I was looking for it for the Next Generation costume I wanted to do....lo, a good 10 years [or so] ago. :D

Things have changed a LOT. You can find better stuff now even in the regular fabric stores, but the breadth of stock available online is amazing.

oh, I *know*, it totally boggles the mind, what I come across now, as opposed to what I couldn't find before.

Of course the drawback to searching on-line is that you have to know *what* you're looking for. LOL Though fortunately most places you can get sample swatches, which makes it *much* cheaper to figure out if what you're looking at is what you want for a project. :D
