FKFicFest recs

First off, gleeeee! that with 20 participants, we ended up with way more than 20 stories. First there was the enthusiastic person who wrote one for each of his recipient's three prompts instead of choosing one. Then there were the "party favor" drabbles as a surprise from co-mods brightknightie and amilyn to all the participants who posted their contributions on time. THEN there was amilyn using her sneaky powers for good, rounding up many of us to write surprise bonuses for brightknightie as a thank-you for her having done most of the modly heavy lifting.

Good stuff in all of them; but of course I can't help having a few favorites.

I already mentioned my wonderful prezzie, "True to Life" by brightknightie, but it bears mentioning again. If anyone's ever built a better historical for FK, I haven't read it.

"A Contradiction in Terms" by hearts_blood: Self-awareness, and self-blindness, and honesty, and Janette cutting through to the heart of things, and foreshadowing, and funny, and several flavors of love. And Pop-Tarts.

"Sugar and Spice" by malinaldarose: Well-plotted casefic, featuring a delightfully-realized Jenny Schanke somewhat ill-advisedly indulging her inner Nancy Drew (or maybe just taking after Dad).

"Health, Food" by celli: Pre-series, Nat makes dinner for Nick. Yes, really. Yes, it's as delightful and cute and faintly bittersweet as you can possibly imagine.

"Stones, Fjords and Umbrellas" by natmerc: Minor characters get the spotlight in a highly entertaining account of Stonetree's introduction to Denise Ford (the psychic in "Dying to Know You").

"Beneath the Surface" by skieswideopen: I'll stick with the author's summary to avoid giving too much away: "Things happen in the background and Schanke never notices...maybe."

"Theory of Lost Things" by leela_cat: Delicate and lovely. Myriad connections to other moments, other people, are just right -- never heavy-handed, just exactly how the mind works. The past is always with us. They made Urs such an intriguing puzzle, and then gave us so few pieces. She deserved to be more than a prettily worried prop, and in this fic she very much is.

These are just my (super-subjective) very very favorites. There are loads of others that are also really, really good. Congrats to the whole crew of participants in the inaugural fest! I'd say it was a smashing success.

Thank you so much for all your time and effort in the fkficfest game, not only writing and beta-reading, but also reading stories swiftly and sharing feedback every day. I appreciate it! And I believe everyone else does, too.

Thank you also for these great recommendations in general, and the one for the story I wrote in particular. I am honored by the compliment!

However -- "If anyone's ever built a better historical for FK, I haven't read it." -- it's possible that you wrote it, you know. :-) Your Janette pre-AFWTD-canon backstory, "Silent All These Years," is a marvel and delight.

thank you. I'm still pretty darn proud of that one, but I'd be rather more thorough with my research these days. Of course, it would also almost certainly take me more than a few weeks to write!

Whether the end result would be substantially different... There's some conflating of Celtic names/pantheon that properly belongs on the other side of the Channel (or in Brittany at best) that I'd probably think twice before trying to get away with these days. But overall, I suspect I'd spend a lot more hours happily reading to put the same amount of information into the story itself.

Of course, there's a lot to be said for that too! To do something that involved with the Internet at my fingertips, in addition to the books I've bought since then, instead of having to leave the house for anything beyond my parents' 1972 edition of Encyclopedia Brittanica!

It's all just an entirely different process now. Different brain, different world. :-)
