In the sense of HOLY MOTHER OF HONG KONG PHOOEY WHAT ARE THEY DOING DOWN THERE???

Translation: Downstairs office space finally got leased, after about a year of vacancy. New tenants have a contractor doing something unknown that involves some form of extremely loud power tool.

Directly underneath me.

For the last two days.

I've been low-grade oogy enough the last few days that brainiacfive uttered speculation involving the F-word (no, the other F-word) last evening. I refuse to consider the possibility that I could be coming down with such a thing with two weekends of P&P left (and no understudy), so I'm officially blaming the headache portion on the shenanigans downstairs.

One of the collectors joked that he was going to incorporate it into his spiel, i.e. "Hear that? We're taking care of the last guy who didn't pay." (Picture this coming out of a very easygoing cross between Will Smith and Dulé Hill. We needed that laugh.)

:: pauses to consider racket ::

I think perhaps they are digging a pit to Hell. In which case a jackhammer, or something darn near as loud as one, is a very sensible choice.

Ye gods, much sympathy. Hope they're done; the renovations one floor beneath my office have been going on without letup for close to two months now...

Two MONTHS? You are a better man than I, my friend. Some piece of equipment or other would have to have been sacrificed to the dark gods by now.

Perhaps they're not actually digging a pit to Hell, but trying to close up a Hellmouth?

Well, the previous tenants were the company that does our IT consulting (they outgrew the space), but you never know. It's always the quiet ones, after all...

As attractive as the mental image of the site as the series-finale Sunnydale Crater may be...

::hugs:: If they dig a pit to Hell, does that mean you'll get to be the local Slayer? You've certainly got the arsenal for the job...

THAT would be an eye-opener for the coworkers! Though the one I mock-kicked in the head one late afternoon wouldn't be overly surprised...

Hey, where I work there's a testing garage almost directly downstairs. It could be dead quiet when all of a sudden I hear a car's engine roaring and tires squeeling like a drag race just started. I sympathize!

>"...a pit to Hell."

Have I mentioned that I've now read Huff's "Keeper" novels? Speaking of part of the plot of the first. ;-)

(Actually, I think I've now read nearly all Huff's fantasy novels, including the latest still in hardback, but excepting the "Grove" pair, which I haven't gotten my hands on yet, and the second-and-higher "Quarters" books, as the first didn't really connect with me -- very "been here, done this; where are the magic horses?" This will all be a much, much longer review/meditation when I get around to it, but I wanted to thank you again for the introduction to her work. It's been tons of fun, and I'm going to keep tuning in.)

You: Feel all better very soon. Get as much sleep as you can and stay hydrated, regardless of the headache's proximate or unmentionable possible causes.

The omnibus volume Wizard of the Grove is available from Amazon.com.

It's long past time for me to re-read them. I still remember snippets of the first book, but almost nothing of the second.

Hee! Hell actually seems to be many people's favorite character.

I'm glad to have introduced you to an author you're enjoying! You're actually ahead of me at this point -- I've yet to work my way back to the Grove or Quarters books. Just started the second Valor, having received the omnibus of the first two for Christmas. (Yes, I received all of four or five books for Christmas, and am still working on them in October. *sigh*)
