Why I love taraljc this morning

(Not that I don't love her all the time, mind you, but this is why I love her this particular morning.)

IT'S NOT EASY BEING GREEN: THE DOOD, GAILA IS AWESOME COMMENTFIC EXTRAVAGANZA

How happy am I to not be the only person who latched onto the perky redhead (Orion or otherwise)?

Gaila!
Thank you so much for posting this link. I will wait a little to read , but I'm bookmarking and making plans.

I was so excited to see an Orion woman Starfleet officer! (Dark Mirror universe "Terran Empire" doesn't count.) Three generations of slave-girl fantasies, take note! And Orion is not (oh, so not) a member of the Federation, so add one more to the long list of obstacles she's overcome to get where she is. I wonder what her major was? I wonder what her job on a starship was? I didn't even catch the name of her ship assignment -- was it the Farragut, the second-tier ship where Uhura didn't want to be? Some people have speculated that she's half-human, because of her red hair.

There is no Wikipedia entry for Trek's Gaila yet. What there is, is disambiguation for:

  • Gaila, a spirit of night in Lithuanian mythology
  • Gaila, Bangladesh
  • Gaila, the fictional kaiju (giant monster)

There is an "Orion (Star Trek)" entry, and her actress is named.

I'm surprised and disturbed to hear that portions of fandom are tearing Gaila down for a sexual history they imagine, when in fact we know only that she has had enough men over to annoy her roommate, and that one of them was Kirk. She can't be held responsible for human males throwing themselves at her, and if she's handling it responsibly -- as she apparently is -- kudos to her! And she's clearly not incapacitating Uhura with her dreaded Orion pheromones, either. And why would they want to tear her down at all? It's cool that an Orion woman made it through Starfleet academy! She's the Spock or Worf of Orions! Only moreso. She's the Rom (Ferengi) of Orions!

:-) Thanks for sharing. :-)

Edited for ridiculous typo. Sorry!

Re: Gaila!
I'll never understand why people want to tear any character down, but it seems depressingly widespread sometimes. Just makes me that much for grateful for the chunk of fandom I inhabit.

There are some absolutely stunning entries looking at where she came from and how she got where she is. Have kleenex handy when you start reading.

I hadn't seen any speculation on her parentage, but it did occur to me as a stray thought. And we never heard what ship she was posted to. I'm with taraljc in choosing to believe her excitement when she turned around to grin at Uhura was because she was on the Enterprise. :-)
