Fly-by comment on Heroes season finale

(No spoilers here, but they're likely to crop up in comments.)

It's a given that these characters are going to do something extraordinarily stupid at, well, any given time, really. It is simply their way, and I have grown to accept it. Well, that and the fact that most of the show's plotlines wouldn't work otherwise.

But that? That was OFF THE CHARTS stupid.

You'd have to have watched this season to get all the parts of how it happened, but the nutshell version is that we now have a shapeshifted Sylar brainwashed into believing he's Nathan. (In place of the real Nathan, because he's really most sincerely dead. Or, y'know, as much as it's possible to be in this genre.)

Because that couldn't possibly have DOOMED TO UTTER FAILURE stamped all over it from the word go.

Or, hey, ASK Claire for same. Thus providing nifty symmetry of her having brought both fathers back from the dead, which would resonate nicely with all that crap Sylar was spewing about how she's going to outlive everyone she loves.

Except for the part where I think they realized belatedly that they opened an unwieldy can of worms with that particular aspect of Claire's ability, and are now assiduously pretending it isn't there. (I'm giving them the benefit of assuming they haven't forgotten.)

SG-1 ran into that problem with the sarcophagus (which they inherited from the movie), and solved it by attaching serious drawbacks to its use. I'm disappointed but not surprised that these PTB haven't found a similar solution to the Claire's Magic Blood problem.

Heck, they could even have had it not work (because he'd been dead too long, or whatever handwavey reason), and then had Angela flip out completely and go for the 100% batshit insane option.

I. Just. ARG.

Wait, wait...this show wasn't cancelled after the stupid of LAST season?

Amazingly enough, no. And there are plenty of people still obsessed with it.

For me it's about 10% grinning stupidly at Hiro and Ando; 5% glimmers of why I used to like Claire, Matt, Mohinder, or occasionally Peter; and 85% headsmacking at the epic levels of stupid everyone persists in.

I'm done.
Yeah, if Heroes gets renewed I don't think I'll bother next season. The last two have just been awful, all over the map character-wise and plot-wise. It's so disappointing--this started out as such a good show. I really thought the producers knew what they were doing.

Re: I'm done.
I think they started out knowing what they were doing. And in a way they sort of still do -- as brainiacfive points out, they've pretty much hit all the classic points one does in a couple decades of comics plot development. Which led to my observation during this ep that "Yeah, it's about time for them to pull an Inferno." :-P

The insane has been rather astonishingly thick on the ground in the latter part of the season. If you gave up on it earlier, you're probably better off staying that way.

I assumed it was because Zach Quinto isn't renewing his contract, since he's gonna be insanely uber famouse after Star Trek. And since they got a conditional pickup for fewer eps next eyar last I heard, I think volume 5 will be the last story.

Claire, alas, annoys me. So I spent last night listening to the ep, but not really paying attention.

Pretty much any solution to that problem, short of actually killing him (which they've demonstrated they're not willing to do), would NEED him to revert to Sylar at the worst possible moment. Certainly this device calls for it. For which I'm sure they're planning on throwing a bucketload of cash at him for a Sooper Speshul Guest Star Event.

But still, there had to be options that didn't require stupid on quite this cosmic level from Angela in particular.

I didn't come back after the writer's strike, despite your nice story about the Irish character -- whom they left stranded in the future without follow-up, yes? -- but more and more people had been beginning to say, oh, they've fixed their problems, Heroes is back, give it another chance... and yet apparently not. :-)

They always seem to get a fresh start and be back on track briefly when they shake up the staff, and then start writing themselves into either the same old corners or new and different ones.

And yes, Caitlin appears to be doomed to eternal loose-end-hood. I've honestly lost track of whether the Peter we have now is the same one who lived through that future storyline, so I'm not sure I can justifiably be annoyed with him for never having mentioned her again.

Now you've made me want to watch Heroes again! And I gave up at 3.03 after the speedster turned up and Hiro had an attack of Stupid. :D

I gave up watching a long time ago, but it's nice to know I was right. *gloat*

The only thing that makes me sad is that with Heroes being mainstream F&SF it means we're gonna be seeing a lot more brain-dead pseudo-genre stuff in the future. Bleh.

Not necessarily. Good writers are good writers, and if that's who turns up not afraid to create something because they have a better shot at selling it these days, more power to 'em.

And what brain-dead stuff does turn up is no more difficult to ignore than brain-dead stuff in other genres. *shrug*

Wait a second, I thought the supposed upside to canceling Pushing Daisies was that Bryan Fuller would make Heroes not suck.

I knew that was a tall order. But I had hope. Not enough hope to not wait for DVDs though.

I gave up on Heroes sometime during the fifty thousand hour long eclipse that existed in multiple parts of the world.

(And now I shall go back into mourning for Pushing Daisies.)

I would have, but I had too much fun laughing at it.

I've noticed that I generally have one trainwreck show that I continue watching even though I have no real hope that it will ever get good again. Heroes has been in that category for quite a while now, and somehow I still manage to enjoy it. Go figure.

I was watching something on the DVR last night and it finished just at THAT moment. I literally screamed WTF? at the tv.

I haven't watched the last couple of episodes yet, so I totally spoiled myself by accident.

I think I've finally lost interest in the show, because I can't believe they all went along with that.

So very not just you.

I've been unable to believe a great many things about the show for quite some time now. It's totally my I-have-no-idea-why-I-still-enjoy-this-but-I-do trainwreck show.

The only reason I am still keeping up with Heroes is that it's one of the few shows my husband and I watch together.

Now that it's done for the season, it's time to get him hooked on Chuck.
