I will now crown splash_the_cat Empress of the Universe and be done with it.

Because there simply isn't enough WORD.

Someone, somewhere is paying for your free lunch.

I swear that fandom needs a welcoming packet that includes the text of the First Amendment and a very blunt explanation of constitutionally protected speech and censorship and big, bold reminder that people are supposed to grow out of the egocentric stage of speech by the time they're four.

Plenty of four-letter words. Even more that are simply blunt and should be obvious but apparently aren't.

Also applies to WAY more than fandom, of course, but that's the flavor of Extra Special Snowflakiness most often encountered in my day-to-day websurfing, so.

She hit the nail on the head here:
I utterly, absolutely, vehemently support the idea of free speech and free expression and free exchange of ideas. But. BUT. BUT. Speech and expression are not fundamentally free. Please. Just sit there and repeat that for a minute. They have a cost. They have consequences. They have impact. To someone, somewhere.

Okay, splash_the_cat rocks my world! As I said in a comment on her post, I've asked her to marry me for that lovely commentary.

This whole thing is getting way the frak outta control...

The thing that drives me most nuts about FREE SPEECH!!11ONE! is that the US Consititution applies to the government limiting free speech. Those who run websites are allowed to govern the content they provide.

And the sad thing is, I've seen this pointed out to people who honestly didn't get why it was significant and/or relevant to the topic.

Funny tangent? I was actually reading the Bill of Rights last night. I looked up the third amendment, because I couldn't remember what it was. :-)

It was so important to them that it came third, but it's almost like a footnote now; I wonder if we're missing something.

I had to look it up just now too.

I'm not sure whether we're missing anything. But I do note it says simply "any house." No qualifications as to whether the house belongs to a U.S. citizen, or is in fact located here.

Because babbling is something that needs to be apologized for in my sandbox. Not. ;-)

When does an LJ transition from being a personal space to being a public one?

Hmmmm. Ultimately, one's own LJ is neither, I think. I tend to think of it as kinda like my front yard: It's my property, but it's in full view of anyone who happens by, including the elementary school across the street. Which means, say, mowing my lawn in the nude would invite arrest. And putting out political yard signs would invite criticism. People wouldn't have the right to take them down, but they most certainly would have the right to tell me they didn't like them.

My new metaphor for an unlocked livejournal is that it's the equivalent of the front stoop of a house in a closely-packed neighborhood. The stoop is your property, but everyone can see and hear what you do there from the sidewalk, so it is a private property that exists in a publis space.

publis space That is an excellent typo. *flees*

Thanks for posting that link. It pretty much sums up my opinions about the latest in fandom drama. There's a point where I roll my eyes and wonder why no one has any damn sense at all. Free speech is no excuse for being inconsiderate or being ignorant.
