How Not To Shoot Ourselves In The Foot

I can think of at least three people reading this who've been around for some-to-most of the occasions over the last decade or so when I've said I/we really needed to get around to writing out some sort of Dos and Don'ts of Save-Our-Show Campaigns.

I knew if I waited long enough, somebody would do it for me, and do it better. (They probably already had, but this is the one that happened to turn up on a blog I read regularly. With the bonus of multiple useful perspectives. So.)

Equally recommended to those to whom it will be valuable new knowledge, and to those who've been part of wee-hours conversations that involved the words "Oh, good God, tell me she didn't send THAT!" (The latter group should tread with caution on that link near the end, the one that says "Don't be like that, okay?" At least make sure there's nothing in your hand with which you wouldn't want to smack yourself in the head...)

I have to say, I didn't think that was a terribly good guide. It said some obvious things, still sounded more fan-petulant than professional and didn't give a lot of useful tips, in the end.

And see, it's the "obvious" basics that I keep finding myself wishing were gathered in one place so I could just say "go here." Every time I think all of fandom must know how this stuff works by now, I get proven wrong.

By "fan-petulant," do you mean fannishly petulant, or petulant about fans? Or something else entirely?

Oh, god, yes. Don't send things! There was, apparently, a point in the Firefly campaign when some people wanted to send apples. Because of the scene in War Stories with the explosives in the apples. WTF?

Thanks for the link, even if this is the same guy who pissed all over fanfic (in that really irritating way you get from the Folks on the Inside sometimes).

The reference makes as much sense as some that have been more effective, but hello, PERISHABLE. Oy.

Any gimmick is going to be such a crapshoot. Especially coming from a subculture that thrives on being too clever for our own good.

And yeah, I really wish he'd stop reminding people about the fanfic thing. It could so easily be left in a no-harm-no-foul place if he'd just stop bloody bringing it up.

Well, he's a shit-stirrer. He likes the attention, and he got a lot of attention from that article.

... me, I don't like shit-stirrers, much. I was gonna repost your link, but I think I will pass. I dislike him enough I don't want to give him the traffic.

I have mixed feelings about the article myself, because as a writer I feel that the ideas it contained could have been organized and laid out much more clearly. But I think I'll throw the link up on the pretender lj comms.

(Because people are still trying to save The Pretender. It ended in 2001. There comes a point when CPR turns into necrophelia, and we passed that point... well, years ago).

Yeah, he tends to get rambly. But it's close enough to standard fannish chattiness/slight snarkiness that I figure it'll click well enough.

And dude, I could have lived without knowing there's still an SOS contingent in Pretender fandom. I can see how it would happen, since they made...how many TV-movies? And heaven knows I've seen a couple equally sad siutations. But yeeeeee nonetheless.

Yeah. I really liked the show a lot, but honestly I'm glad they cancelled it. The writers were taking it in a truly stupid direction towards the end there. The second (and last) TV movie ended with the discovery of scrolls that foretold the coming of a savior named Jarod. I was just like "Ok, guys, what the effin' hell are you smoking?"

But some people are like "They were going to make a third movie! We sohlud get them to make a third movie!" Personally, I don't want to know where the hell they were going with that.
