Under siege

So, the smokers and I have all been wrong all along. It's not the smoke or the cicadas they have to worry about.

The first one showed up here about 9:30, same time as IT Guy. He hadn't heard any of the news reports, and he thought she was a customer of the financial planning place downstairs. He held the door for her, and she chomped right down on his arm. He's not looking good.

She didn't get in, thank goodness, and we were already on the way down to barricade the entrance with the vending machines. Big glass doors aren't that great to have today. The fire doors in the back are easier to secure, and still something we can let people in if they're alive and need shelter. We've got about 20 extra people so far; it's not going to be fun if the air conditioning stops working.

The cicadas, of course, couldn't care less. They're still singing away, loud enough to cover the shuffling footsteps outside. There are at least a dozen of them out there now. We've heard a few bursts of gunfire from the direction of the Wal-Mart -- no trouble hearing that over the cicadas. It's only about 200 yards away, but it might as well be on Mars with the trees in between. Nobody's answering the phone over there; we're trying not to think too hard about what that means. NPR and Google News are full of conflicting information. They're obviously doing their best to get it straight, but right now we can't tell much of anything.

We have some muffins from a client visit this morning, and 20 mouths to feed besides our own. This isn't going to end well. Be safe, everyone.

The mechanics at the office here are holding the encroaching hoarde at bay-- I regret ever complaining about having to drive all the way out to the 'burbs for work. Home's in the city, so it's probably overrun already. I hope the dog's alright.

The Triskelon confirms that they're deploying teams as fast as possible--I got them on the phone for a minute or two before the line went down. I just hope they don't zombify our rescuers before they arrive.

Stay strong-- help is on the way.

(your funny, how it makes me laugh).

We still have internet and power, but the phones are kaput. Not good.

If we get out of this, people are going to feel pretty silly for freaking about the cicadas.

oh yes indeed they are. I believe the cicadas may be our best chance at this point--we've discovered a zombie weekness. If a cicada lands on a zombie and starts singing, the zombie will flip out and totally explode.

I suggest opening an upper-story window and luring as many as you can in with sugar water (muffin may have to suffice). When they come, toss them at the zombies. They seem to survive the explosion just fine... we're even getting a few double hits, where the cicada gets blown onto another zombie and starts singing again. I'm going to try to line up a three-hitter if I can.

The zombies can go ahead and try to out-hoarde the cicadas, but somehow I think we've got the upper hand.

So THAT's where those splatters on my window came from just now! O_O

We can't open the windows, but the cicadas are thick enough here that we don't have to throw them either. It's been all we can do to keep from carring two or three of them in on our clothes. Surely the zombies will have the same luck, right?

Stuck here at Montgomery Acdemy when a earthmover out of control crushed my car. We have lots of food in kitchen but building is not , repeat NOT securable. Using a length of rebar as an effective Z smashing tool, but would loooove some more firepower. Do they still sell guns at Walmart? I might try for the one on Anne street.

Re: Help
Our Wal-Mart still has gun stuff, but we're in the burbs. And it's been quiet over there for a couple hours now. Those big boxes aren't as easy to secure as you might think...

Damn. I should have brought my boom box into the library with me, so that I could listen to NPR reports. Frankly, I've been convinced of Daniel Shorr's zombification for years, so he should be able to offer insighful commentary, along with a completely gratuitous reference to Watergate and being on Nixon's blacklist.

Jun. 13th, 2007 08:09 pm (UTC)
No Watergate so far, but he has implicated Nixon. I think. There's a lot of static. It might have been Lipton.

The tea or the obsequious fangrrrl who moderates the Actors Studio? If the latter, then NPR is surely lost to us. :-(

Or Peggy? I can't tell. He ate the sound engineer about fifteen minutes ago.

How rude.

The cats should be fine. They only seem to care about humans.

I'd send you some cicadas if I could...

Well, in the absence of cicadas, you have to try whatever's handy...

Icon lurve, even in the midst of global catastrophe. :-)

Things aren't too bad here. Yet. I haven't decided if being on an island is a blessing or a curse. Probably more of a blessing right now, from the sound of things on the mainland.

We've stocked up the boat. Haven't decided if we're leaving or not. Or rather, we haven't decided WHEN we're leaving. I hear open water is relatively safer... if you can FIND open water and avoid all the other maniacs in boats, on floats, and generally mucking around. We're also in the middle of a pretty ugly Nor'easter, but I'd rather be blown about than eaten alive. ;)

Holy cow!

You guys have an IT guy who doesn't surf the Net all day? Damn...

Don't get caught short - make a salle to Walmart before the guns are all gone. Remember, guns don't kill zombies. Well placed bullets fired by guns kill zombies.

I've been wondering about your "so many flavors of bad" icon for ages. What is it from?
Jun. 14th, 2007 03:37 pm (UTC)
It's Indira Varma as Niobe on Rome. I just loved the expression. She got so exasperated with so many things.

I'm glad you put up all these links! I couldn't really join in the fun yesterday, but I wanted to catch up in retrospect.

Next year I'll be ready and waiting...
