Go get 'em, Tiger! No, seriously. Get 'em.

Further proof (as if we needed it) of Marvel's unerring ability to shoot their own credibility in the foot with a Cable-gauge shotgun:

http://devildoll.livejournal.com/750924.html

Um, guys? There's a fine line between "pinup" and "trash." It's that distant glimmer in your rearview. :-P

ETA: And just to underscore the point, this thread on girl-wonder.org has the bit of 2D cheesecake this masterpiece is based on. Which is at least on the line. And actually looks somewhat like MJ.

ETA2: cschoolgirl has THE best comment yet: Actually, if you notice the way she is holding it and the smile, my bet is that it is a tub of bleach. Because this is going to be the last time Peter will be asking her to do anything like this.

And y'know, I'm not sure whether it makes it better or worse that it just plain doesn't look like her. Without the Spidey costume, I would honestly never in a million years look at it and think MJ.

Don't even get me started on comics statues. The more I see, the more I'm glad I'm not into collecting those much.

DC is just as bad unfortunately.

Well, in medie's post, someone made the comment that Supergirl's secret identity is apparently now Britney Spears.

*snerk* One of the commenters on devildoll's post indicated that it's apparently not an inaccurate representation of the current version of the character anyway. In which case, methinks I'll stick with my old issues of the Peter David incarnation, TYVM.

Super-Torso almost works as a character in her current Legion appearances, but otherwise, um, yeah, give me my old pre-Crisis Kara any day. Should I even mention the column where the Supergirl editor pleads for more girl readers?

I was never a big DC reader -- I think I might own two issues of anything with her from the 80s. I got unexpectedly hooked on Peter David's "Earth-born angel" for a while there, tho. Does it count if I like the version of her on the JLU cartoon? (Who is, well, pretty much pre-Crisis Kara.)

Should I even mention the column where the Supergirl editor pleads for more girl readers?

Wow. That's...really, really sad.

I eventually learned to like the JLU Kara. At least she has a personality.

And it wound up being really condescending.

You'll want to take a look at the Supergirl statue too. I do believe that I've reached a level of frothing feminist rage at comics that I haven't reached in all of...okay, fine, a month.

All I can think of is the interview with Neil Gaiman. "The shop keepers would thank me for bringing women in. And I'd think 'if you want them to come back, wash the floor and treat them like people.'"

...they should also tell their employees not to follow them around and stare at their breasts. Because, honestly. That's just the kind of treatment I want to get in a comic shop when I'm there to buy something.

May. 10th, 2007 07:00 pm (UTC)
I must have found the good shops, because I never got that treatment. Then again, my mother was with me a lot of the time in the early days. Now I have had someone try to impress me with his manga knowledge at one of the chain bookstores. I think I surprised him by knowing more than one title.

My local comic shop in my hometown was fine before I hit adolesence, but after? Dude, walking in with the Catholic school uniform did NOT help matters. And really, it only got worse as my chest size got larger.

Also, I swear, if anyone invites me into their RPG campaign to hit on me ever again, there will be some busting of heads with said roleplaying books. Plus I'll look up the skeevy thirtysomething who did that to me when I was FIFTEEN and bust him over the head just on general principle.

Long ago, circa X-Men #12 (not Uncanny X-Men #12, just X-Men #12), I missed the issue at both my college and home comic shops, and so called around to find one, and ended up at a strange shop across town. They sold me the book, and politely asked me to come again, and I blurted out that I didn't think I would. The cashier asked why. I struggled to find a way to explain that the posters of superheroines in string bikinis plastering the walls were not exactly making me feel welcome. Given my undergradness at the time, I think I settled on saying that the shop was "not woman-friendly."

Charming. I don't think any shop I've been to since the mid-90s didn't have the six-foot poster of the MJ pinup from the first "Marvel Illustrated Swimsuit Issue" on an interior door somewhere, but that's usually it. And it looks like something I can believe she would have in her modeling portfolio anyway.

Words... failing me...

I gotta go with PNR on Girl-Wonder:
Wow, that's just... wow. It's revolting on so many levels. I mean, she's actually barefoot! Washing her husband's clothes! By hand, in a bucket! In ratty jeans! While wearing a thong! And falling out of her shirt! AND giving a "naughty" look!

Why, she's the perfect mix of subservient and sexy! Hey guys, she'll do your laundry... and love it!

Gah, I'm going to go look at Wonder Woman and kittens for a while to restore my dwindling faith in humanity.

**blinks** **looks** **blinks** **looks again**

uhhh.....I *was* going to say that that wasn't even MJ's *hairstyle*, but looking through scans_daily, I can't say that... Still not red enough though.

And what the *hell*? She's dressed like a skank? And she's wearing a PEARL NECKLACE with that outfit?? uhhh.....now while I *can* see MJ in low-slung jeans...with the thong showing? NO. Far too tacky.

And her hand-washing the Spidey costume? Well, I can see that it'd probably *need* to be hand-washed....except as I recall from way back when when I was actually *reading* Spidey...Peter was washing it IN A LAUNDRYMAT!! So, no need to washie by hand! ARRRGH!!!

I dunno who this poor slob is, but Mary Jane it AIN'T!!
