ETA: And just to underscore the point, this thread on girl-wonder.org has the bit of 2D cheesecake this masterpiece is based on. Which is at least on the line. And actually looks somewhat like MJ.

ETA2: [info]cschoolgirl has THE best comment yet: Actually, if you notice the way she is holding it and the smile, my bet is that it is a tub of bleach. Because this is going to be the last time Peter will be asking her to do anything like this.

I was never a big DC reader -- I think I might own two issues of anything with her from the 80s. I got unexpectedly hooked on Peter David's "Earth-born angel" for a while there, tho. Does it count if I like the version of her on the JLU cartoon? (Who is, well, pretty much pre-Crisis Kara.)

Should I even mention the column where the Supergirl editor pleads for more girl readers?

I must have found the good shops, because I never got that treatment. Then again, my mother was with me a lot of the time in the early days. Now I have had someone try to impress me with his manga knowledge at one of the chain bookstores. I think I surprised him by knowing more than one title.

My local comic shop in my hometown was fine before I hit adolesence, but after? Dude, walking in with the Catholic school uniform did NOT help matters. And really, it only got worse as my chest size got larger.

Also, I swear, if anyone invites me into their RPG campaign to hit on me ever again, there will be some busting of heads with said roleplaying books. Plus I'll look up the skeevy thirtysomething who did that to me when I was FIFTEEN and bust him over the head just on general principle.

Long ago, circa X-Men #12 (not Uncanny X-Men #12, just X-Men #12), I missed the issue at both my college and home comic shops, and so called around to find one, and ended up at a strange shop across town. They sold me the book, and politely asked me to come again, and I blurted out that I didn't think I would. The cashier asked why. I struggled to find a way to explain that the posters of superheroines in string bikinis plastering the walls were not exactly making me feel welcome. Given my undergradness at the time, I think I settled on saying that the shop was "not woman-friendly."

Charming. I don't think any shop I've been to since the mid-90s didn't have the six-foot poster of the MJ pinup from the first "Marvel Illustrated Swimsuit Issue" on an interior door somewhere, but that's usually it. And it looks like something I can believe she would have in her modeling portfolio anyway.
