*lightbulb*

Okay, I just figured out why I got that "this situation is not what it seems on the face of it" vibe from the interaction between Kate and her keeper (the marshal or whatever-he-is), and why his snarking at her about "Maybe they'll believe your story" immediately made me more inclined to believe whatever her story turns out to be.

The general snark level doesn't help, of course, but neither does the fact that it's the same actor played Rance, the uber-misogynist cartoon of a villain in the unaired Firefly ep "Heart of Gold."

(I should have placed him sooner, but I choose once again to blame my crappy rabbit-ears reception. I was shaking my head last night over the fact that TV looked like that more often than not throughout my pre-cable childhood. Spoiled, spoiled, spoiled...)

And now I can't decide whether I need to adjust my perceptions to compensate (I'm usually much better about that), or they've got him oozing figurative slime on purpose...

Oooh, I recognized him as Ray Flood from the Boomtown episode "Insured by Smith and Wesson." I guess he just gets typecasted as jerks ;-D

Well, he gives good jerk. ;-> Hopefully he has fun with it.

Your perennial villains/asshats tend to be less restless about typecasting on the whole. I always think of Nigel Bennett's philosophy, which pretty much boils down to "I hover around being creepy and get paid for it. Exactly what part of this should I be complaining about?"

For the record, I got a very nasty vibe from him, and I haven't seen him in anything else. It's not just a need to realign perception. (And I'm taping the show with my lovely clear cable reception, so let me know if you want dubbage and I'll try to bribe Alesia into doing it.) ;)

Not so far, but I'll keep it in mind. Thanks! :-)

Two notes on this; I've seen the actor playing a non-jerk on some X-Files 1940's episodes. He usually played a nice cop wondering why aliens were taking over a baseball team or something. ;> So, because I know he can be a non-jerk, and because I was getting jerk-vibes last night, I'm with you, I think Kate's either not guilty of whatever she's accused of, or it isn't something terribly serious.

Other note: the marshal he's playing now also mentioned, after Kate said, "I don't care what you think", that "Well, that's always been true." I'm definitely getting a vibe that they've known each other longer than marshal and arrested person.

Damn, doesn't this thing just *suck* you in?

*nods vigorously* I thought there'd been something more specific that pointed to their having personal history.

And I still have that niggling little thought-voice going "everyone's ASSUMING he's a marshal and she's under legal arrest, but it ain't necessarily so..."
