Monday morning drive-by

Don't wanna be at work. Am therefore sneaking a few minutes to post two random thoughts arising from this past week's Atlantis.

Thought the First: "You're like a kid." Um, yeah. *rolls eyes* "Pot, Kettle, this is flight. You're cleared for takeoff."

Thought the Second: Tasers? "Good for fifteen to twenty feet." Ooooooooh, special! *THWAP* Hello! Zats! How did we let you people go bopping off on a long-term jaunt to another galaxy without ZATS????

That is all. (Well, actually it's not, but, y'know, that pesky work thing, not conducive to posting in any kind of depth...)

Yeah I know... at work myself...

I still need to watch all the eps of atlantis I've recorded... lol

::giggle:: I thought much the same thing...

the only thing I can think of is that they were worried carrying goa'uld technology would set off asome kind of defence or lockout system. Asgard and Ancient tech has done it before, so... ::shrugs::

Those setups have all detected actual Goa'uld, tho, not their tech. Which isn't really theirs to begin with.

So, good try, but I can't buy it. Still looking. *sigh* It's gonna bug the hell out of me until some explanation is offered, but I'm not holding my breath.

well, let me think about it a bit...I've been noticing other stuff I want to get into a post or fic or something as well...let;'s see what else my brain can come up with while avoiding thinking about school...

*chuckle* I meant until they offer an explanation. But I'll certainly take what I can get.

::g:: I'm sure they'll give something. They've got to get to autopsy a full Wraith eventually...

I'm still back on an explanation for why they didn't bring zats in the first place. *wry g* Autopsying a Wraith will be cool, but has no bearing on that question, I'm afeared...

um...maybe they have them, but pulled the power sources to add to the naqahdah generators? So you have a bunch of useless zats lying about? (well, they could throw them at the enemy, which seems to work against Superman, but...)

*chuckle*

I appreciate the effort, but I'm from the school that if you have to work that hard to justify it, it doesn't work.

So far I'm most swayed by geonncannon's somewhere-in-a-box-we-haven't-unpacked theory...

hmm...ok, so they were put in one of the elevator/transporter thingies, andat some point, someone will stumble upon them in a heretofore unexplored section of the city...

::crash::

"Dammit! Who left these damned boxes here?!"
"Careful-- we've never been in this part of the city. Who knows what they might contain."
"You mean like styrofoam?"
"Hm? Oh, hey, zatnykitels. Wondered where we put those. Come on Major. Lots more to see..."
"I hate you..."

(and I'll add this fic to the list...)

*giggle* I think you can add it to the "accomplished" list, actually, with a little polish. It doesn't really need any more than that. Vive la vignette! ;-)

I'm just wondering how much ammunition they brought along for the P-90s.

Oh, I'm way past my ranting about that. Or, y'know, mostly.

They really do need to find a more efficient way of dealing with Wraith scouts than the current "fill 'em with lead, run like hell, and fill 'em with MORE lead" approach.

Hubby asked semi-rhetorically if they'd tried head shots yet, and while I can't remember a specific example, I think they have. But he's got a point -- even if a single shot won't do it, you could scramble the contents of the skull pretty well with less than what they're pouring into chest cavities right now. And nerve connections are presumably still more complex/delicate than other systems, so it'd at least take them longer to regenerate.

This would be the tip of my tactical rant iceberg... *wry g*

no, it's a fair point...maybe they don't want to try a zat if they're trying for a live capture? because they don't know how it'd react with Wraith physiology?

They really do need to find a more efficient way of dealing with Wraith scouts than the current "fill 'em with lead, run like hell, and fill 'em with MORE lead" approach.

I assume they've been collecting the stunner things as often as they can. Which is actually a nice weapon; you can hurt your characters and get them into bad situations, but not worry about killing them. And, it makes perfect sense within the Wraith ethos; why waste food by killing it before you can feed?

Hubby asked semi-rhetorically if they'd tried head shots yet, and while I can't remember a specific example, I think they have.

I can't remember, but it likely has been tried. if they're wearing a helmet, that implies there's something to protect.

But he's got a point -- even if a single shot won't do it, you could scramble the contents of the skull pretty well with less than what they're pouring into chest cavities right now. not necessarily. the helmet could be just to protect the eyes/face. they may not have their brains in the same place as we do. actually, I'd be surprised if the neuromuscular tissue wasn't gifted with the same automaticity that our cardiac tissue has; it was sorta-kinda-in-a-layman-way implied in the pilot. They could theoretically not have a "main brain" structure, but rather a dissociated one scattered throughout the body (this is something I came up with when I was playing around with Goa'uld physiology.) One assumes their GI system is more or less nonexistant, if they eat human essence; probably energy of a type. one assumes they need O2 for some aspect of cellular nutrition, so lungs are likely present, and they have blood which implies some kind of cardiovascular system. as for most of the other systems...who knows. until they get more than a forearm to autopsy... ::shrugs::

This would be the tip of my tactical rant iceberg... *wry g*

::listens:: John says they're working on it. ::listens more:: Um...no, I don't think she'll be going out and testing theories. Well, mainly because she's not in the Pegasus galaxy...

Same holds for the tasers and stun grenades.

I assume they've been collecting the stunner things as often as they can. Which is actually a nice weapon;

And I think they'll fill the storytelling role of zats pretty handily. So I understand from a RL creative standpoing why they wouldn't want to clutter up the landscape with two alien weapons of overlapping function. But they still need an in-canon justification for no zats having been brought to Atlantis.

they may not have their brains in the same place as we do.

*nods* Have had the thought, would like to see it tested.

but rather a dissociated one scattered throughout the body (this is something I came up with when I was playing around with Goa'uld physiology.)

*nods again* I've figured for a while that the Goa'uld are more neural tissue than anything else, at least in their current evolutionary form. "Cleo" and her contemporaries, probably less so.

I'm not discounting the possibility for the Wraith, but I'd have to see direct observational, or indirect environmental, evidence before I pursued the thought very far.

Which is not to dissuade you from doing so, of course. ;-D

true. but they understand those better than zats, maybe?

I know. And hopefully they'll do that.

I assume they will, at some point. they have a live one in their clutches now, so I assume they'll be running tests etc.

true. I've got notes on their physio around here somewhere...

I understand that. Of course, they're only on 5 eps aired, so, we'll hopefully get that evidence.

Which is not to dissuade you from doing so, of course. ;-D

yeah, me too. ::shakes head:: wonder if they chose Pegasus because of the ignominious fate of Bellerophon...it works more or less with the fate of the Ancients. (glory, then trying to fly to Olympos, getting knocked outta the sky and crippled.)

Zats
You know that the zat thing has bothered me, as well. This is the way my thoughts have been going:

They are useful.
The Pegasus team would want them.
They wouldn't just forget them.
Therefore they weren't allowed to take them.
Why?
Because they are a non-renewable resource, and the Earth is still under threat.
The government can build naquada generators, so you get to take those.
Bullets? How many boxes? And want to take the means to make more when you fidn the raw materials? Sure!
Zats? Now, hold on there. We might need them, and now that our cozy relationships with the Tok'ra nd Jaffa Rebels are kind of strained, we've had to go back to taking them one by one off of the enemy.
So, no go on that one, soldier!

Re: Zats
Ah-ha! That makes sense. Just needed to think more from the Earth end again -- I had pretty much quit that angle of it after "it's not like we don't have lots now." But we might not have lots later.

Yay! Brain is happy now. ;-)

I might as well add my own two cents' worth, if that's OK?

If I recall right, they didn't bring along *any* Goa'uld tech. (Naquada generators notwithstanding.) I keep asking myself what the SGC does when a zat gun runs out of ... well, runs out of zat, or if a zat gun breaks, or so on or so forth. No friendly Jaffa or Tok'ra handy to reload or fix 'em.

Maybe they just brought human tech to ensure that human engineers on the Atlantis team would be able to handle anything that went wrong?

For what it's worth.

*nods* I see that as a reason not to depend too heavily on stuff like that, rather than not to bring it along at all. But, together with what brainiacfive pointed out about their being needed back here (for the same reason you mentioned about the Tok'ra and Jaffa backing off), it's an explanation I can live with.
